The garage that was nothing more than another place to clean only moments ago, suddenly felt like a prison.
My hands were still shaking from everything that had just happened. The memory of Khron's touch lingered on my skin, making it impossible for me to think clearly.
Eunice's widened eyes locked onto Khron, and the fury burning within them was impossible to miss.
"What are you doing here, Eunice?" Khron asked, finally turning to face her.
Eunice stared at him in disbelief, blinking several times like she didn't hear him correctly. She took a slow step forward, her brows knitting.
"What?" she asked, her voice filled with astonishment. "Did you just ask me what I am doing here?"
Her tone rose with every word until she let out an exasperated sigh, her shoulders shaking with barely restrained anger.
"So you spend one moment with the maid, and suddenly you have become a complete fool, asking me ridiculous questions?" she snapped.
"Listen, Eunice—"
She didn't let him finish. She raised her hand, cutting him off without hesitation. The warning in her eyes made it clear that she had no interest in listening.
"No. Before you say another word, answer my question." Her voice became dangerously calm. "Did you just say she is your mate? Did I hear you correctly?"
Khron tried once more to calm her.
"Eunice—"
"Answer me, Khron. I want to hear you say it so I can laugh before I deal with your cheating ass."
Without waiting for an answer, she burst into a mocking laughter that echoed throughout the garage.
"The Moon Goddess must truly despise you," Eunice said after her laughter subsided. She wiped at the corner of her eye as if brushing away an imaginary tear before looking back at him. "She clearly doesn't want you sitting on that throne. Your brother is definitely going to become Alpha instead. His mate is someone worthy of standing beside him." Her gaze slowly shifted toward me, overflowing with disgust. "And yours... is nothing more than a maid."
Much as my heart was hammering painfully against my chest, I still found the courage to speak, refusing to let her insults crush me.
"Don't speak to me that way. You don't even know me."
Regret instantly settled inside me at the moment the words left my mouth. Both Eunice and Khron turned to look at me.
The disgust on their faces stole away every ounce of confidence I had managed to gather.
"Keep your mouth shut before I shut it for you," Khron snapped at me with a cold and merciless voice
Eunice let out a scoff as she stepped closer.
"And who exactly do you think you are?" she asked, every word dripping with contempt.
I had never felt smaller and more worthless in my life before then.
Eunice took another step toward me, clearly intending to confront me herself, but Khron moved in front of her before she could reach me.
"Are you actually protecting her?" she asked, disbelief and betrayal lacing every word.
"I'm not protecting her," Khron replied, trying once again to calm the situation. "I just want us to clear up this misunderstanding."
For a moment, the fury in Eunice's eyes eased, and a.slow smile took its place.
"What misunderstanding?" she asked quietly. "There is no misunderstanding at all." She tilted her head slightly. "You found your mate. That is something worth celebrating."
Her gaze lingered on me before returning to Khron.
"And I would be more than happy to make sure everyone hears the wonderful news."
After saying that, she turned on her heel and started toward the exit of the garage.
Hope stirred within me at that moment. I thought maybe she had decided to leave. Maybe she would walk away and allow Khron and me the chance to figure everything out.
I didn't want to spend the rest of my life hidden away like a shameful secret, not by my own mate. I wanted to be acknowledged and accepted.
But that tiny spark of hope was soon extinguished.
Khron reached out without hesitation, his hand wrapping firmly around Eunice's arm before she could take another step. He pulled her back into the garage, his expression growing darker with frustration.
"Stop being unreasonable," he said, his voice firm.
Eunice slowly lowered her gaze to the hand gripping her arm before lifting her eyes to his face. Her lips parted in disbelief, and she blinked several times like she could not believe what she had just heard.
"I am the unreasonable one now?" she questioned. "You cheated on me, Khron, but I am the unreasonable one because I wanted to do something good for you?"
Khron released a weary sigh and slowly shook his head. "I didn't cheat on you, Eunice," he replied, attempting to explain himself.
Her eyebrows rose sharply. "Really?" she scoffed. "So kissing her and groping her does not count as cheating in your books?"
He dragged a hand through his hair, his frustration becoming increasingly evident. "I only lost control for a few seconds," he admitted. "I regained my senses almost immediately. I'm sorry. It will never happen again."
Every word that left his mouth pierced my heart like a knife. I stood there in silence, barely able to breathe as the pain settled deep inside me. Somewhere inside, I had hoped he would defend me. Instead, he was apologizing as though touching me had been a terrible mistake.
Eunice folded her arms tightly across her chest, her expression hardening. "We are done, Khron," she said without hesitation. "Our contract is over."
The frustration he had been trying so hard to contain finally surfaced. "Come on," he said. "You can't do this. I have apologized, Eunice. What else do you expect me to do?"
She looked at him with cold, emotionless eyes. "What do I want?" she echoed quietly. The silence stretched between them before she finally answered. "The only way we are getting back together is if you reject her, right here, right now."
Blood drained from my face.
"No!" The word escaped me before I could stop it. My voice shook with panic as I frantically shook my head. "No... you can't do that."
Khron's jaw tightened as he turned back to Eunice once more. "Come on, Eunice," he pleaded. "Don't take this so far. I can keep her hidden. No one ever has to know."
Eunice's eyes narrowed dangerously. "So you can continue sneaking back to her behind my back?" she asked bitterly. "Is that what you want?"
He immediately shook his head. "That is not going to happen."
"I am not willing to take that risk," she replied. "You have two choices, Khron. It's either me or her. Make your decision."
The tears had already begun streaming down my face long before he spoke. Deep inside, I already knew how this would end. I could feel the rejection coming before he even opened his mouth.
When Khron finally turned to face me, the last bit of strength left my body. My knees struck the cold concrete floor as uncontrollable sobs tore through me. Every ounce of pride I possessed disappeared as I begged him with all the dignity I had left.
"Please... don't reject me," I cried. "I can't accept it. I can't bear that pain. I'm not ready for it. Please, Alpha. Please... please."
My tears blurred my vision until I could barely make out his face. Desperately, I called upon the Moon Goddess, silently begging her to stop what I knew was about to happen. I couldn't believe I had found my mate only to lose him on the very same day. It was a cruelty I could not bring myself to accept.
But the world did not stop for my heartbreak. Time refused to show me mercy.
Khron's voice finally broke the silence.
"I, Alpha Khron Shema of Clear moon Pack, reject you, Zarelle Curtis, as my mate and sever our bond henceforth."
The words shattered everything inside me and my entire world collapsed in that instant.
