A guttural, agonized howl echoed through the deepest corners of my mind as Zamelda cried out in anguish. The sound was so filled with torment that it reverberated through every part of me. The pain in her voice was no different from the pain tearing through my own heart.
Eunice, however, remained standing a short distance away without the slightest hint of sympathy on her face.
Instead, a satisfied smile curved her lips, one that told anyone looking at her that she had just claimed a victory she feared would have slipped through her fingers.
Becoming the future Luna of Clear Moon Pack and standing beside Alpha Khron as his mate was no small achievement. Now, after watching the sacred bond between true mates break before her eyes, she knew that title belonged to her beyond question.
Khron remained where he stood. His gaze never left me as he waited, expecting me to accept the rejection and finally put an end to the unbearable tension between us.
But I could not give him what he wanted.
"Accept the rejection," he said through gritted teeth. His voice was rough with frustration. "Let's get this over with."
His words struck me like another crushing blow, breaking apart the little composure I had managed to hold on to. Slowly, I forced myself to rise from the floor. I parted my lips, but not to say the words he was waiting to hear.
Without warning, I turned and ran out of the garage without looking back.
My feet carried me forward, hitting against the ground as I fled from everything I could no longer bear. I had no destination in mind, nor did I care where I ended up. All I knew was that I needed to escape. I needed to get away from Khron, from Eunice, and from the unbearable heartbreak.
I raced past the Pack House, past the stables, and deeper into the forest beyond. Zamelda stirred once more within me, her grief intertwining with mine until I could no longer tell where her suffering ended and my own began.
Lost in my anguish, I failed to notice that I had crossed the invisible boundary leading into the forbidden hunting grounds. It was a place reserved for the pack's finest hunters, those brave enough to venture deep into the dark forest in pursuit of dangerous prey.
No one entered those woods without a reason, and certainly never alone. But grief had robbed me of all caution.
Eventually, my legs could carry me no farther. My chest burned as I struggled for breath, and at that very moment, Zamelda surged forward. Silver fur erupted from my skin as my bones cracked and reshaped themselves.
Within seconds, I was no longer running as Zarelle. I was running as Zamelda.
She ran with only one purpose, which was to lose herself in the endless wilderness and outrun the pain chasing us from within. But she had barely covered any distance before the silence of the forest was broken.
The crack of a gunshot split the air, and instantly, a searing pain erupted through our neck as a bullet buried itself deep into the flesh.
The force of our sprint sent us crashing to the forest floor. Agony consumed us instantly, spreading through our body as the poison coating the bullet seeped rapidly into our bloodstream.
Zamelda gradually retreated into the depths of my consciousness, her presence growing weaker until I found myself shifting back into my human form. I lay motionless among the fallen leaves, warm blood soaking the side of my neck as it flowed steadily from the wound.
"A silver wolf?" a woman gasped in utter disbelief.
I forced my eyes open. My vision was blurred, but I was still able to make out the face hovering above me.
It was Amelia, the pack's witch.
Confusion and amazement were plastered on her features as she knelt beside me, her attention fixed on the wound at my neck.
"The silver wolf... is an omega?" she murmured as if she was speaking to herself in disbelief.
She carefully held her hand above my injury, avoiding direct contact before turning sharply toward one of the hunters accompanying her.
"Go and get Alpha Khron," she ordered without hesitation. "Now."
The man immediately turned and sprinted through the forest without wasting another second.
Amelia then looked toward the woman standing nearby with a satchel slung over her shoulder.
"Bring me the green-rooted herbs," she instructed. "Quickly."
The woman hurried off at once, leaving Amelia alone beside me.
I felt her gently place a hand near my wound before she began to chant. Magic filled air around us. I could feel its warmth wrapping around me, desperately trying to mend what had been broken and pull me back from the edge of death.
But I no longer wanted to be saved.
The unbearable ache inside my chest had begun to fade. My breathing slowed, and for the first time since Khron had rejected me, I felt something that looked like peace. I wanted to remain in that quiet stillness. I wanted to drift away to a place where nothing could hurt me ever again.
Khron finally arrived, but I had to fix my full attention on him to catch the flicker of shock crossing his face. It appeared for only a moment before he buried it beneath the same cold expression he always wore.
"What happened to her?" he asked, his voice completely lacking any emotion.
"She was running through the hunting grounds," Amelia replied without taking her eyes off me. "We mistook her for a deer, and Banny fired before any of us realized what she really was."
She finally looked up at him.
"She is a silver wolf."
Khron froze. "A silver wolf?" he repeated.
Amelia nodded firmly. "Yes. The very silver wolf I told you about. The one the Moon Goddess promised would come to give you the strength to defeat the Lycan King and claim your place on the throne."
The color drained from Khron's face as he staggered back a step.
"Oh, Moon Goddess... What have I done?" he whispered hoarsely. "I have made a terrible mistake."
Without another thought, he dropped to his knees beside me. For the first time since I came to know him, genuine panic crept into his voice.
"What do you mean you made a mistake?" Amelia asked, her hands still glowing with magic as she continued working to keep me alive.
Khron's voice broke as he answered.
"She is my mate... and I just rejected her."
Amelia's chanting faltered. Her hands paused briefly before her widened eyes snapped toward him.
"You did what?" she asked, horror filling her voice.
"I didn't know," Khron said desperately, dragging a trembling hand through his hair. "How was I supposed to believe that a silver wolf could be an omega? I didn't know. Eunice threatened to end our contract if I refused to reject her. I thought I had no other choice."
Amelia stared at him like she couldn't believe what she had heard.
"You rejected a silver wolf?" she asked in disbelief. "A wolf sent by the Moon Goddess... for the sake of a beta?"
"I didn't know!" Khron shouted, the desperation in his voice no longer hidden. "Please... do something. Save her. I'm begging you."
A deep sadness settled across Amelia''s face.
"I can't," she said quietly. "She is no longer fighting to stay alive. Her spirit has already begun letting go. There is nothing I can do to force her to remain."
She paused before continuing.
"But I can make her soul return to earth. You will have to wait until the day she is reborn. Perhaps then, if fate allows it, you may have the chance to earn her forgiveness."
The strength completely left Khron's body.
He slumped beside me, tears filling his eyes as regret finally caught up with him.
"Please, Zarelle," he whispered in a broken voice. "I'm so sorry. Please forgive me."
But his apology came far too late.
I could still feel the final remnants of the mate bond connecting us fading with every passing heartbeat. I knew what I had to do.
Gathering the last bit of strength left inside me, I parted my lips and spoke in little more than a whisper.
"I, Zarelle Curtis, accept your rejection, Alpha Khron Shema, and sever our bond henceforth."
The bond snapped, and everything fell silent.
