Chapter 47 *** 12:35 a.m. Queen Anne’s County, Maryland - Eastern Shore of Chesapeake Bay Luke arrived at the house knowing how late he was. It was dark. The nearness of the water seemed to add electricity to the air. At first, he parked his car a hundred yards from the property. He killed the headlights, then waited and watched. No one was moving on the road. TV lights flickered from a home far to his left. Closer, a quarter of a mile away, the Thompson house was dark. His sense of dread was so complete that he felt he might vomit. All along, he had made mistakes, and now it had probably cost Becca and Gunner their lives. He should have told Becca long ago about the risks his work entailed. Scratch that—he shouldn’t have become involved with Becca, or anyone, in the first place. H
