Chapter 2: Elena thanked Mary deeply and politely for picking her up. She hadn't expected her boss to come in person. During their brief exchange of messages, Elena had mentioned the time and station where she would arrive, and had assumed a driver or staff member would be sent. Instead, Mary herself had shown up, her friendly and welcoming demeanor instantly putting Elena at ease. "It's really no trouble at all," Mary said warmly, her eyes sparkling as she gestured for Elena to follow her to the car. "I wanted to meet you in person! And the kids were dying to meet you too." She chuckled as she glanced over her shoulder at the car, where the twins were pressed against the windows, watching Elena with wide, curious eyes. Elena smiled at the children as they tumbled out of the car to greet her. "Thank you for coming," she said, addressing both Mary and the twins. "You’re all so welcoming, it’s really kind of you." The twins, a boy and a girl who looked to be about eight, were a whirlwind of energy. The moment Elena settled into the passenger seat, they peppered her with rapid-fire questions from the back. “Is your hair naturally curly?” “Do you like animals?” “Are you scared of ghosts?” “Are you going to stay with us forever?” Elena laughed softly, turning in her seat to face them. "My hair is naturally wavy, I love animals, and... ghosts?" She paused for a moment, then winked. "I guess we'll have to see about that one." Mary smiled warmly as she drove, seeming unfazed by the twins' relentless energy. "They're just excited to have someone new around. You might be a bit of a novelty here," she said with a wink. "They've been talking about you nonstop since they heard we’d hired a nanny." Elena smiled, feeling a mixture of amusement and warmth as she tried to answer the children's questions as best she could. The twins’ constant chatter, mixed with Mary’s cheerful conversation, made the car ride pass in a comfortable blur. But soon, Elena found herself staring out the window at the passing landscape as they neared the mansion. The first glimpse of Ashford Manor made her breath catch. Rising out of the forest like a monument to another era, the mansion was a marvel of Gothic architecture. Its towering spires seemed to reach toward the sky, and the intricate stone carvings that adorned every inch of the building reflected the craftsmanship of only the finest artisans. Massive windows framed by dark ivy overlooked the estate, and the rich, autumnal hues of the surrounding forest made it look as if the mansion had been plucked from a forgotten fairytale. But it wasn’t just the grandeur of the place that struck her. As the car approached the wrought-iron gates, Elena felt an overwhelming rush of nostalgia. Her heart began to pound in her chest, and a sudden wave of melancholy washed over her. It was so strong that it nearly took her breath away, a sense of sadness so deep that it felt like it didn’t belong to her. She pressed a hand to her chest, trying to steady her breathing. "What is wrong with me?" “Elena?” Mary’s voice cut through the haze. “You alright?” Elena blinked and forced a smile, shaking off the strange feeling. "Yes, I’m fine. Just... admiring the view." As they pulled up to the grand entrance, the mansion's beauty continued to unfold before her. Inside, the décor was just as opulent—if not more so. The walls were lined with portraits of the Ashford ancestors, their regal expressions seeming to watch her every move. Chandeliers of glittering crystal hung from high ceilings, casting a warm glow over the polished marble floors. Every room they passed was a seamless blend of old-world elegance and modern luxury: antique furniture paired with sleek, contemporary touches, making the mansion feel like it existed in two eras at once. Elena was still taking it all in when Mary began explaining the children’s schedules. "We’re a bit busy, but nothing too crazy. The twins have school in the mornings, swimming lessons twice a week, and ballet on weekends. I’ll show you their rooms later, but for now, let's head to the office and meet the rest of the family." As they walked through the mansion, Elena couldn't help but admire the rich decorations that preserved the family’s heritage—paintings, tapestries, and sculptures, all telling the story of centuries of Ashford history. But there was also something more modern woven into the design—subtle touches of luxury that made the old mansion feel like it had grown with time, evolving while maintaining its soul. They soon arrived at the office, a cozy room filled with the scent of leather-bound books and polished wood. A large window overlooked the sprawling estate, and sitting on a cushion near the window was a teenager, who glanced up from his book when they entered. "That’s Anthony’s son," Mary whispered to Elena before speaking aloud. "Hello, Alex. This is Elena." The boy nodded politely, offering a quiet greeting, but Elena barely registered it because her attention had shifted to the man sitting in the far corner of the room. Her heart skipped a beat. He was completely pale, with skin like marble, and his long, dark hair framed an aristocratic face that looked like it had been sculpted by an artist. His black clothes were impeccably tailored, fitting his tall, slender frame perfectly. His eyes were half-closed, but even from across the room, she could see the darkness in them—something bitter and brooding, like he was lost in a world of his own pain. Elena couldn’t stop staring, a strange mix of awe and discomfort settling over her. There was something about him that drew her in, something that felt both haunting and familiar, though she couldn’t place why. Mary broke the silence, her voice light and cheerful as she stepped forward. “Sebastian, this is Elena. She’ll be working with us from now on.” The man—Sebastian—slowly stood up from his chair. His movements were graceful, but there was a stiffness to them, as though he were bracing himself against something. He looked at Elena with a deep frown, his dark eyes narrowing as they swept over her. For a moment, it seemed like he was about to say something, but instead, he simply turned away, nodding slightly in acknowledgment. “Welcome,” he muttered, his voice deep and cold. Elena swallowed, her pulse racing as she tried to gather herself. "What was that?" she wondered, feeling a strange sense of unease mixed with an inexplicable pull toward him. Mary, oblivious to the tension in the room, clapped her hands together. “Well, now that you’ve met everyone, let’s get you settled in!” As they left the office, Elena couldn’t shake the feeling that something was... off. She had felt drawn to Thornvale for reasons she couldn’t explain, and now, standing in this mansion with its strange residents, she couldn’t help but wonder if she had been drawn here for a reason she had yet to understand.
