Chapter 8

980 Words
MARYANN'S POV: "Maryann, is that really Jessica's brother? He looks like her," Ruth says, her large blue eyes fixed on me as I shut the door. "Yeah. That's her brother," I reply, moving away from the door to my personal fridge to pull out a bottle of ice water. "Do you want a drink?" I ask Ruth, seeing her take in my vast room. "No. I'm not thirsty. But you have a huge room," she says, her lips curling into a smile as she moves to sit on my white chair. "Thanks. It's a simple room," I reply, knowing my parents spoil me with gifts so I don't get ruined by boys. My room is painted pink, and I have many Barbie dolls. "You're lucky," Ruth compliments after a subtle glance around. "But why aren't you and Jessica friends when your brothers are close?" Ruth asks thoughtfully, and I sigh. "Jessica doesn't like me, and I don't know why. I already told my brother I don't want to see her here. Mike says Jessica likes him, but he doesn't like her, so he thinks she might show up on her own," I reply, moving to sit across from Ruth. Her expression remains thoughtful, and I wonder what's going through her mind. "What are you thinking about?" I ask, snapping her out of her trance. Her cheeks flush as she laughs. "Nothing. I'm just thinking about how handsome Jessica's brother is. Does he play ball too? You know Jessica's parents are rich—that's what makes her a bully. So why is her brother here with yours? Are they in a relationship?" "What? No way. My brother is not gay. Ruth, how can you say that?" I ask, disappointment washing over my features. "I'm sorry, Maryann. I didn't mean it like that. There's nothing wrong if your brother is gay. I just want to know his relationship with Jessica's brother, since they're together in the room across the hall," she says eagerly. "My brother is not gay. He never will be. They play ball together, and according to Mike, he's learning online trading in Forex. He needs Jessica's brother to guide him," I explain, and relief washes over Ruth's features. "That sounds better. I was beginning to think otherwise." "You shouldn't," I glare at her, and she laughs. "I'm sorry. So what are you up to? Staying in your room all day?" She looks at me as I rise to have my bath. "Yeah. I don't have anything to do. I want to take my bath. After that, we can study or watch movies together," I tell her, and she smiles. "Alright. I'll wait. Can I use your television?" Ruth picks up the remote and peers at my face. "Yes," I reply, and she powers on the television. I move to the bathroom to bathe, my mind reeling at the thought of Mike and Sunny as a couple. No, that can't be possible. I wave the uneasy feeling away. I know my brother is in a polyamorous relationship, but that doesn't mean he'd be into men. Why am I bothered if Mike and Sunny are a couple? I'm sure my mother would faint if she heard of such. She'd have Sunny arrested. My lips curl into a smile, and I step into the bathtub to shower. After a long bath, I step out, dry my body, and go to my closet to pick something to wear. When I step out wearing a long blue dress that hangs loosely around my body, Ruth scowls and asks, "Is that what you plan to wear to Mike's birthday?" "No. I'm not going downstairs until six," I reply, moving to my vast pink bed to relax. "What? So you're not leaving this room until then?" Ruth asks, and I sigh. "My parents' orders—stay in my room until they're back from work. I can't go against them," I reply, peering at Ruth's face and joining her in watching the romance movie. "How can your parents be so overprotective? You're not a little girl anymore. Do they want you to remain a virgin until old age?" Ruth asks, her tone serious, and I blush. "Maybe," I reply, and she sighs. "That's not right." "Don't worry. I'll be fine. We should enjoy the movie," I say, not wanting to discuss my parents. They're only being caring, though I disagree at times. I'm not as stubborn as Mike to go against them. I pull out two packs of popcorn I store in my locker and hand one to Ruth. "Thanks. But I don't think you should heed your parents all the time. You have to break some rules to get what you want—unless you're okay with it," she says seriously, and I sigh. "I'm not okay. But I don't have a choice. I can't go against my parents," I reply sadly, lowering my head as I sit back on my bed. "Maryann, I'm not saying you should go against your parents. Most times I used to think mine were the worst, but hearing how yours ground you and are overprotective of you, I don't know if I should thank my parents or feel awkward that they just don't care where I go. Your parents are nice, but a girl knows what her heart wants. It's your choice to follow them or break the rules." "I can't. I can't do anything against my parents. Someday I'll gain freedom when I get married." "So how will you find a husband by staying inside all the time?" Ruth asks seriously, and I laugh. "Don't worry. I'll still further my education, and that way I'll meet my husband. It's never too late. I'm only 18," I say, laughing, and Ruth smiles. "Alright," she agrees, and we fall silent and return to watching the movie together, while eating our popcorn.
