CHAPTER 10.

1155 Words
MARYANN "What do you want?" I ask Sunny as he walks up to meet me. His lips curl up in a smile as we stand alone in the corridor. The sound of Mike and his friends' conversation and laughter in the living room echoes in the corridor as I peer at Sunny's face. My heart beats faster as I wonder what he wants from me. "Maryann, I want to have a chat with you. I know that I already promised Mike I would keep my distance from you, but I cannot help wanting to talk to you personally. Can I have your contact?" Sunny asks as he quickly slips his hand into his baggy trousers' pocket and pulls out his phone. He hands it over to me, and my hand shakes as I accept it. "Why do you want my contact? Why didn't you ask Mike?" I ask, but he only smiles and says, "I cannot ask him. Will you give me your contact? Please?" I inhale sharply as Sunny stands close to me. "Alright. I will give it to you. But I hope Jessica doesn't use this to mock me," I respond, keeping my head down. My fingers quickly click across the phone screen as I type my contact before anyone sees us. "Done." I quickly pass Sunny's phone back to him, feeling like a thief caught in the act. "Thanks, Maryann," Sunny says with a smile, but I quickly dash into my room and shut the door on him. I lean against the door, afraid that he might follow me inside. So I quickly lock it and go to my bed to sit down. *Why did Sunny ask for my number? Why didn't he ask Mike?* My heart pounds in my chest as I sit on the bed, softly biting my lower lip. *What does Sunny want from me?* I feel restless, rolling on my bed, my heart racing at numerous thoughts of why he asked for my contact. Unable to figure out why, I finally lie on my bed, clutching my phone and waiting to see if Sunny will send me a text message. But I feel disappointed when I don't see a single call from him. Tears sting in my eyes, but I blink them away. "I'm not that hopeless," I mutter, deciding to play a game on my phone. When I get bored, my heart still feeling disappointed without getting a single call or chat from Sunny, I sit up, put my phone away in the drawer, and lie back on the bed. I clutch my pillow against my chest and keep thinking about Sunny. *Did he make a bet with Mike that he could get my contact? Does Sunny think of me as cheap?* I cannot sleep, as I keep wondering about Sunny's motive behind asking for my contact. *Did Mike send Sunny to ask me?* My head feels heavy with numerous thoughts. Soon enough, my eyes grow heavy, and I succumb to sleep. * * * Later in the day, I wake up to the loud sound of music. The loud banging on the door jolts me awake, and I spring up on the bed. "Who's knocking?" I ask myself, panicking, as I cannot believe that Mike actually brought a DJ to play loud music. Thankfully, the estate security supports parties. I quickly pick up my phone to see if there is a text from Sunny. When I don't see any, I feel a sharp pang in my heart, like I have been stabbed by an invisible dagger. "What's wrong with me? Why should I care to check for a chat from him?" I mutter, moving to the door to pull it open. When I glance at the clock, I see it's 4:00 p.m. I cannot believe I have slept so long. As my hand pulls the knob, I find Mike standing there. He peers at me with concern. "Sis, are you alright? What are you up to?" Mike asks, standing by my door, his face etched with worry. He's shirtless and wearing only black trousers. I lower my head, not wanting to mention to Mike that Sunny asked for my contact. "It's nothing. I just woke up. What's wrong?" I ask Mike, raising my head to meet his gaze. "Nothing. I just wanted to check on you and know you are fine. Mom called and said that she has been trying to reach you, but your number isn't connecting. So I came to check on you again. Are you sure you are fine? You can come downstairs to join us. You don't have to stay here and wait until our parents are back," Mike says softly, trying to cheer me up. Looking at my brother's face, I sigh and assure him. "I am fine. I can wait for Mom to return. Can you help me get my lunch? I don't want to disturb your friends." Mike draws a breath and says, "This is the last birthday I'm celebrating here. That's why. I am sorry for inconveniencing you." "It's fine," I reply, smiling, and he nods and says, "I will be back." Mike moves away, and I wait in my room for his return. When he comes back, he is carrying a tray of steaming food. "Thanks," I say, standing up to accept the tray from his hands as he enters my room. "Take care, sis. Two hours from now, Mom will be back," Mike assures me, and I smile and watch him leave my room. I quickly move to sit on the chair as I pick up the spoon and eat the delicious rice and chicken. After I am done, I put my tray away and move to the balcony to peer out. I see Mike and his friends at the pool. Some of the girls are already in the water, swimming and chatting. Shockingly, as I look further, I see Jessica has arrived as well. She is wearing a red swimsuit, and I won't deny that she has a seductive body, too. *Why did Mike let Jessica in here?* I mutter and sigh as I continue to watch them. Jessica catches my gaze on her, and she pretends to be friendly while holding a glass of wine. She calls out to me, "Maryann, come on, it's your brother's birthday. Why are you still in your room?" I look at her, wondering when we became friends. Several of Mike's friends and even Sunny peer up at me. When I look at Sunny, he's wearing only black shorts. His chest is exposed. Unfortunately, there is a girl with him. She is wearing a black bikini. She is fair, and I recognize her as Victoria Owen, one of my seniors in high school. "Is she Sunny's girlfriend?" I mutter to myself and move away from the balcony as my chest hurts, watching them stand so close to each other.
