Chapter One.

The pregnancy test slipped from Ava Carter's trembling fingers and hit the cold bathroom tiles with a soft clatter. Two pink lines. She stared at them, willing them to disappear. They didn't. The tiny bathroom suddenly felt too small. Her heartbeat pounded against her ribs as if trying to escape. "No..." she whispered, shaking her head. "No way." She reached for the test again, hoping she had read it wrong. Maybe the cheap pharmacy kit was defective. Maybe she had counted the days incorrectly. But the answer remained the same. Ava's mind drifted back over the past few weeks, and then she remembered her missed periods, that she brushed aside, convincing herself that it was just stress from work. Then came the morning sickness. She had woken up feeling nauseous almost every day struggling to eat. At first, she blamed it on irregular eating habits and the pressure she had been under.Even the constant exhaustion hadn't made her suspicious. She had ignored every sign her body was giving her. Now staring at the two pink lines, every missed period, every nauseous feeling, and every restless night in the became to make sense to her. She took another strip and tested the second time, but the two pink lines appeared again. Positive. The truth she had refused to consider was now impossible to deny. Her knees weakened, and she lowered herself onto the edge of the bathtub. Three months. Three months since the night she had promised herself she would never speak of again. Three months since she walked away from Damien Blackwood with nothing but a broken heart and a secret, she never expected to become real. No... no.. Ava stared at the pregnancy test strip in disbelief. "This can’t be happening." No," this has to be wrong." She glanced at the pregnancy test again, studying it as if staring at it long enough would make the result change. "Maybe I used it the wrong way," she murmured to herself, and then she looked at the bathroom mirror desperately searching for explanations. "Or maybe it’s faulty." Her heartbeat quickened as hope. "I will buy another one," she said, trying to convince herself. " Yes, that's what i will do, I will get a different brand." Maybe this one it defective." she clung to the possibility with everything she had, refusing to accept the truth, to her , everything was better than believing those two pink lines were real. And then the loud female voice from the television in the living room broke the silence. "Breaking news".... "CEO Damien Blackwood is expected to make a major announcement tonight during the Blackwood Foundation Annual Ball." According to sources close to the billionaire, the event will include the official announcement of his engagement to a renowned entrepreneur Victoria Sincliar." Ava froze Her fingers loosened around the pregnancy test strip, and then it slipped from her hand and hit on the floor with a shape crack. "No. ".. she whispered, and then this time, the world carried a different kind of pain. "Damien...you can't". Ava stared at the television, where Damien's face filled the screen, she stood still, unable to move, her ear rang. She forgot how to blink, her mind refused to process what she just heard, slowly she looked back at the pregnancy test strip lying on the floor, then back at Damien's smiling face beside another woman tears filled her eyes. Countless questions raced through her mind. "Had that night meant nothing to him?." Had he already planned to marry another woman?." Tears rolled down her cheek, followed by another. She pressed her trembling hand against her mouth to stop herself from crying. Ava's body refused to cooperate, her tremble uncontrollably. She took an u steady step backwards, and her breathing became uneven as though the air had suddenly disappeared from the room. She managed to reach for the bathroom sink, hoping it would steady her,but her fingers barely touched the edge before they slipped away. The walls seem to close in around her. Her vision grew blury. Damien's smiling face on the television faded into a faze. The ring on her ears drown out the female reporter's voice on the television. She tried to call his name, but no sound came out. The room spins around her, and then at the moment, everything goes blurry. Before she could reach the wall for support, her body went limp, darkness closed in, and she collapsed onto the cold bathroom.
