Chapter 14: The Way She Lets Him Go

776 Words
Zara didn’t sleep that night. She sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the city lights while Jason slept beside her, his breathing steady, unaware that she was already making a decision that would tear them apart. Ethan’s words replayed in her head like a threat carved into stone. Some truths don’t just hurt. They destroy. She looked at Jason;strong, relentless, willing to burn the world for her and felt a familiar ache spread through her chest. She had seen this version of herself before. The girl who loved him enough to leave. By morning, she was calm. That scared her more than the panic. Jason noticed immediately. “You’re quiet.” “I’m thinking,” she said softly. He studied her over breakfast. “About Ethan.” “About you,” she corrected. His expression shifted. “That sounds dangerous.” She gave a small smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “Jason… what would you do if loving me cost you everything?” He didn’t hesitate. “I’d pay it.” Her heart cracked. “That’s exactly the problem,” she whispered. She waited until evening. Until the penthouse felt too big. Too fragile. “Jason,” she said suddenly. “We need to talk.” He turned to her, alert now. “What’s wrong?” She took a breath. “This..us..it’s moving too fast.” His eyes narrowed. “No, it’s not.” “Yes, it is,” she insisted. “Your war with Ethan. The media. The pressure. I never asked you to destroy your life for me.” “You didn’t ask,” he said calmly. “I chose.” “I don’t want that choice,” she said, voice trembling. “I don’t want to be the reason you lose everything.” Jason stepped closer. “You’re not.” She forced herself to meet his eyes. “I can’t do this anymore.” The words tasted like poison. Jason went very still. “Do what?” “This relationship,” she said carefully. “This chaos.” His jaw tightened. “Is this coming from you or from Ethan?” “Does it matter?” “Yes,” he snapped. “Because I won’t let him scare you away from me.” She swallowed hard. “You don’t need to protect me.” “I always will.” “That’s not love,” she said, hating herself. “That’s obsession.” The word landed hard. Jason recoiled slightly. “Is that what you think this is?” She nodded, even as her chest burned. “You’re fighting everyone for me. That’s not healthy.” His voice dropped. “Say what you actually mean.” She closed her eyes. “I don’t want you anymore.” The lie echoed between them. Jason stared at her like she’d struck him. “Look at me and say it again.” She opened her eyes. “I don’t want you,” she repeated, tears blurring her vision. Silence. Then Jason laughed once, sharp and broken. “You’re doing it again.” Her hands clenched. “Doing what?” “Sacrificing yourself so I don’t have to,” he said. “You think I don’t recognize this pattern?” She turned away. “This is different.” “No,” he said quietly. “It’s exactly the same.” He stepped closer. “Tell me Ethan threatened you.” She shook her head. “Tell me you don’t love me.” Her breath caught but she forced herself to speak. “I don’t.” Jason’s eyes darkened, pain flashing through them like lightning. “You’re lying.” “Believe what you want,” she said, voice shaking. “But this ends now.” A long pause. Then Jason nodded slowly. “Fine.” The word terrified her. “If you want distance,” he said, coldness settling over him, “you’ll have it.” He walked past her, grabbing his jacket. “Jason...” He stopped at the door but didn’t turn around. “I told you once. If you walk away again, it won’t be because you don’t love me.” The door closed. And Zara crumpled to the floor, sobbing. Across the city, Jason stood in his car, hands gripping the steering wheel so hard they hurt. “She thinks I’ll stop,” he muttered. His phone buzzed. A message from his head of security. SECURITY: We traced the leak. Ethan’s not acting alone. Jason’s eyes went cold. “No,” he said quietly. “She’s wrong about one thing.” He started the engine. “This war isn’t over.”
