Fault Lines

Zara didn’t sleep. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Jason standing in her office lobby like a storm in a tailored suit… and Ethan’s face when she hadn’t answered his question. Me...or him. Morning came too fast. Zara dragged herself out of bed, showered, dressed, and still felt like she was carrying a weight in her chest. By the time she got to work, the whispers had doubled. “Isn’t that her?” “That’s the billionaire’s ex, right?” “I heard he bought the building for her…” Zara kept her head down, but humiliation burned her skin. Her best friend, Maya, was waiting at her desk, arms crossed. “Okay,” she said flatly. “You don’t get to avoid this anymore.” She dropped her bag. “Avoid what?” Maya leaned in. “Jason Hale.” Her breath caught. “I don’t want to talk about him.” “That’s funny,” Maya replied. “Because the entire office already is.” Zara sank into her chair, exhaustion finally breaking through. “He’s back. That’s all.” “That’s not all,” Maya said softly. “He doesn’t come back like that unless there’s history you never told me.” Silence. Then, slowly, she nodded. Maya pulled a chair closer and sat. “Start talking.” “He was my first everything,” she whispered. “First love. First heartbreak. The person I planned my whole life around.” “And you just… left him?” Her fingers curled into her palm. “I had to.” Maya studied her face. “You’re still in love with him.” “I don’t know what I feel,” Zara said quickly. “I just know he scares me.” “Because he has money?” “No. Because he still knows me.” Before Maya could respond, her phone buzzed. Ethan calling. Her stomach dropped. She declined the call. A second later, a text came through. Ethan: I’m outside your apartment. We need to talk. Now. She closed her eyes. Maya stood. “Go. But don’t lie especially not to yourself.” Ethan didn’t yell. That somehow made it worse. He stood in her living room, hands in his pockets, jaw tight. “How long were you planning to let me find out like everyone else?” “I didn’t know it would become public,” she said. “Jason..." “There it is,” he interrupted. “You say his name like it still belongs in your mouth.” “That’s not fair.” “No,” he snapped. “What’s not fair is proposing to someone who’s clearly still emotionally married to another man.” The word proposing hit her like a slap. “I never said yes,” she whispered. “But you didn’t say no either.” She looked away. Ethan exhaled, anger giving way to hurt. “Do you love him?” Her heart pounded so loudly she was sure he could hear it. “I loved him,” she said carefully. “That’s not what I asked.” Tears blurred her vision. “I don’t know.” Ethan nodded slowly, like he’d been expecting that answer all along. “Then we need to pause this.” “Pause… what?” “Us,” he said. “The wedding plans. The future. Everything.” Her chest tightened. “You’re leaving me?” “I’m giving you space,” he replied. “Because I refuse to be the man you settle for while you’re dreaming of another.” That broke her. “Ethan, please..." He stepped back. “Figure out what you want. But don’t come back to me when you realize billionaires make terrible fairytales.” The door closed behind him with a finality that echoed through the apartment. She slid down the wall, sobbing. Zara was confused. Her phone buzzed. She didn’t need to look to know who it was. Jason: He came to see you, didn’t he? She stared at the screen, tears dripping onto her phone. Her: How do you know everything? Jason: Because I know you. And because I know when you’re hurting. Another message came almost instantly. Jason: I never wanted to destroy your life. I just want to be part of it again. She typed… deleted… typed again. Her: You already destroyed my peace. There was a pause. Jason: Then let me earn it back. A knock sounded at her door. Her heart stopped. She stood slowly, dread and longing tangled together. When she opened it, Jason stood there no suit this time, just a dark shirt, sleeves rolled up, eyes raw and unguarded. “I know you didn’t ask me to come,” he said quietly. “But I couldn’t let today end without seeing you.” “You shouldn’t be here,” she whispered. “I know.” He took a breath. “But neither should he have been.” She hugged herself. “You’re tearing my life apart.” Jason stepped closer, voice low. “Your life was already breaking. I just exposed the cracks.” She looked up at him, anger and grief colliding. “Why now? Why come back now?” His eyes darkened. “Because I spent years becoming a man worthy of you… only to find out I might be too late.” Her heart fractured. “I can’t promise you anything,” she said. “I’m not asking for promises,” Jason replied. “Just honesty.” Silence stretched between them, thick and electric. Finally, she whispered, “I never stopped loving you.” Jason’s breath caught. That confession changed everything. And there was no turning back.
