Chapter 7

1049 Words
Roman ordered his men to inject Vivian with a sedative and place her under strict surveillance. Charlotte woke up from her daze, trembling with fear, "Roman, she tried to kill me!" Roman soothed her gently, "It's okay. I will keep her under control." Still shaken from her brush with death, Charlotte spoke in a panicked tone, "No, Vivian will never listen to you. Her brother is dead, she will definitely come after us for revenge! Roman, we have to kill her!" Roman paused for a moment, his expression shifting instantly from gentle to ice-cold. "No one can hurt her except me. Charlotte, your gentle and obedient nature is your strength. Don't forget that." Charlotte collected herself immediately and softened her voice, "Roman, I was just so scared... Don't be mad at me..." Roman's expression softened slightly, and he instructed his assistant, "Bring Aaron's body back. After all, he is Vivian's own brother; he deserves to be laid to rest properly." Vivian opened her eyes from the darkness, staring at the ceiling with hollow, empty eyes. The scene of Aaron's death was burned permanently into her mind. "Brother, I will definitely avenge you." Since Roman was already convinced she'd betrayed him, she'd just go and do it for real! The Ziegler siblings killed Aaron, and she would make them pay with their blood! Nothing but mad hatred remained in her eyes, and her fingertips trembled faintly. Three days later, Roman came to see her. His expression was gentle, "Vivian, tomorrow is your brother's funeral. Go and pay your last respects to him." Roman nodded in a docile manner and said nothing. Seeing her compliance, Roman felt a weight lift from his heart. He walked to her and gently stroked her hair. "If you'd just been this obedient from the start, none of this would have happened." Vivian spoke calmly, "Roman, can you let Simon attend the funeral tomorrow? I want him to apologize to my brother in person..." Her face was haggard, and her voice was so soft it was heartbreaking. Roman agreed to her request without thinking. ***** The next day came. Vivian sat in the car, turning her head to look out the window. When the car arrived at the cemetery gates, Roman and Charlotte got out first. Vivian hurriedly scrambled from the backseat into the driver's seat and locked the door. Her gaze landed on Simon, who was standing at the cemetery entrance in a printed floral shirt with a smug grin on his face. The hatred she had nurtured for a long time wrapped around her entirely. She pressed her foot to the gas pedal and drove straight toward Simon. Simon sensed that something was wrong, but before he could run, the car slammed into him, sending him flying through the air before he crashed heavily to the ground. Vivian turned the car around and prepared to hit him again. Several black off-road vehicles blocked her path. Without the slightest hesitation, she pressed the gas pedal again and again, ramming forward. She never stopped... not even when the car's front section was crumpled into unrecognizable wreckage, not even when blood streamed down her forehead. When Roman ordered his men to force open the lock and knock her unconscious, she gasped out, "Roman, for every minute, every second that I am alive, I will never give up..." In the last moment before she lost consciousness, she heard Roman's words to her, "Vivian, why do you always... disappoint me?" ***** When she woke up again, Roman lifted his eyelids and glanced at her indifferently, "Simon broke three ribs and one leg. Have you gotten your anger out now? I already ordered people to bury Aaron yesterday. This matter is over now." Vivian stared at him brimming with hatred. "Impossible." Roman's eyes turned cold. "Do you want your brother to not even rest in peace after death?" Vivian's breath was disturbed, and she looked at him in disbelief. Roman's gaze was dark and unreadable, and his tone softened. "As long as you apologize to Simon on the day he is discharged from the hospital, this matter will be put to rest. From now on, no one is allowed to mention this again." The day Simon was discharged from the hospital happened to be Roman's birthday banquet. The cruise ship was packed with guests. Vivian wore an emerald green dress, with her hair swept up high into an updo. Charlotte could not resist sneering at her, "Don't you look all nice and fancy when you doll yourself up — no wonder you've been able to snag Roman's heart! Apologize to Simon later, or I'll dump all of Aaron's ashes!" Vivian shot her a cold glance, and said nothing at all. Halfway through the banquet, Simon appeared in a wheelchair. Vivian picked up a glass of red wine and walked toward him. When Simon saw her, he wasn't the least bit panicked. Instead, he said disdainfully, "You? You really think you can kill me?" Vivian spoke calmly, "I shouldn't have run you over..." She stepped behind Simon, quickly pulled the hairpin out of her updo, and sliced it across Simon's throat. Blood splattered across her face, and a delighted smile tugged at the corner of her lips. "This is how I should have killed you!" The guests immediately scattered and fled in all directions. Vivian raised a hand to wipe the blood from her lip, and burst into manic laughter. Her laughter sounded like the wailing of ghosts and howling of wolves, it froze everyone's blood. Her eyes were pitch black, as if they would swallow everything in their path. Suddenly, she caught sight of Charlotte screaming in terror, and killing intent once again filled her eyes. She charged straight toward Charlotte. Right as Vivian's hairpin was about to pierce her neck, a gunshot rang out. A bullet from Roman's gun tore straight through her body, and she fell into the sea like a loose leaf. In the instant the sea swallowed her, she saw herself at seven years old: extremely scrawny and frail, fighting a stray dog for a bone. Roman handed her a chicken leg and asked her, "Do you want to come home with me?" She closed her eyes, and whispered softly to herself in her heart, "No."
