A night out

Lila breathed a sigh of relief as she closed her bedroom door standing against it she looked up at the ceiling and smiled. Finally, alpha Marcus was heading back to his pack, and Lila felt she could enjoy her last week of freedom, and she intended to make the most of it! A buzzing noise distracted her from her thoughts she realized it was her phone on her nightstand, she walked over to see "Avery" flashing across the screen. She smiled, quickly answering. "Lila! I'm back home, and we have to celebrate your birthday. I'm thinking tonight we hit the town just us two!" Avery’s voice was full of excitement. Lila hesitated, leaning back against the pillows. "Why do I get the feeling I'm going to end up in trouble?" Avery sighed dramatically. "Come on, Lila! It’s just one night. Harmless fun! You just turned 18 and missed out on your big day celebrations. We deserve to let loose, right?" Lila chewed her bottom lip, the temptation tugging at her. She hadn’t seen her best friend in weeks, and a night in the city felt so enticing. "Where are you thinking we should go?" Avery’s voice dropped to a more conspiratorial tone. "Oh, Lila, you’re going to love it. There’s this rooftop lounge downtown called Midnight Skies. It’s stunning! Panoramic views of the city, shimmering lights everywhere, and the best part? Nobody from our pack ever goes there. It’s exclusive, but I pulled some strings. We'll blend right in." Lila’s curiosity piqued. "Midnight Skies? Isn’t that the one with the glass dance floor and VIP cabanas?" "Yes! Exactly! It’s high-end but not stuffy. Perfect for letting loose. They’ve got a DJ spinning all night, and I heard there's a live show too." Lila bit her lip, trying to suppress the excitement bubbling inside her. "It sounds... amazing, but what if someone sees us?" Avery’s laughter rang out. "Stop worrying! We’ll be fine! Everyone there is too busy showing off or having a good time to care about us. Plus, who’s going to rat us out? This is your belated 18th birthday! You deserve to celebrate without looking over your shoulder. Just imagine—a few drinks, dancing under the stars, and forgetting everything for one night." Lila rolled her eyes but couldn’t help the smile tugging at her lips. "Fine, fine. But if my parents find out, this is all on you." "Deal," Avery said smugly. "Now pick something that screams ‘I’m 18, free, and ready to conquer the world,’ because we’re going to own that rooftop tonight." After they hung up, Lila raided her wardrobe, slipping everything she would need into her backpack. She would tell her parents she was sleeping at Avery's house. Slipping out of her room, she ran to quickly tell them. As she went to knock on the study door, she stopped in her tracks when she heard raised voices. "Victor, you have to stop this war!" her mother’s voice rang out, tight with anger and concern. "I don’t want Jacob to inherit a fight he can never win." Her father’s tone was colder than usual, his words laced with frustration. "Amelia, you don’t understand what’s at stake. The Blackwolfs have what’s rightfully ours. Do you think I can just let that go?" Lila’s heart pounded as she stood frozen outside the door, her breath caught in her throat. "Victor, listen to yourself!" her mother pleaded, her voice trembling. "Jacob is barely old enough to understand his responsibilities, and you want to leave him with a war that could last generations? The Blackwolfs have been fending us off for years. They’re strong, and you know it. Do you really want our son to carry the burden of an unwinnable battle?" "Be quiet woman! All you ever do is nag. I am alpha of this pack and I will run it how I want!" Alpha Victor roared. Lila’s chest tightened, her mind reeling. She had never heard her mother even raise her voice slightly at her father. Her father sounded like he was in a dangerous mood she better distract them from their argument. She took a deep breath, steeling herself before knocking softly on the door. The voices inside paused, and after a moment, her father called out, "come in" Lila pushed the door open and stepped into the room. Her parents were standing by the large oak desk, her mother’s face tight with worry, her father’s expression hardened. The tension in the air was thick, and Lila instantly regretted interrupting. “I… uh… just wanted to let you know I’m going to Avery’s tonight,” Lila said, trying to keep her voice steady. “We’re going to catch up. I’ll probably stay the night.” Her mother’s eyes softened, the anger from the argument momentarily fading. Victor folded his arms, eyeing Lila with a critical gaze. “You’ll stay at Avery’s? Anything else planned?” Lila nodded quickly. “No, just a girls’ night.” Her father studied her for a moment before giving a small nod. “Alright. Tell her father to come by the pack house tomorrow I need his help with something. And you be back by midday tomorrow, no later.” Lila felt a wave of relief wash over her. “I will.” She moved over to her mother hugged her and nodded to her father before walking out of the room. She made her way down the hall picking up her backpack where she left it and headed toward the front door. She glanced back once, her parents still in the study, voices now hushed but still tense. Taking a deep breath, she turned the doorknob and stepped outside into the cool night air. The sky above was dotted with stars, but Lila barely noticed as she hurried along the familiar path toward Avery’s house. Avery’s family lived near the pack hospital, where her father was the head doctor. The walk wasn’t too long, The streets were quiet, the usual hum of activity from the pack more sombre than usual. Lila wrapped her arms around herself, more out of habit than cold, as she thought about her mother’s words. As she neared Avery’s house, she saw the soft glow of lights from the windows. Avery’s home was a warm, welcoming place, always bustling with life, a stark contrast to the tension that filled Lila’s own home. Lila quickened her pace as she approached Avery’s front door, the familiar warmth of its lights shining through the windows. After knocking, she didn’t have to wait long before the door swung open, revealing Avery’s bright smile. “Your here!” she exclaimed, stepping aside to let Lila in. “ I’m ready for our girls’ night, I really needed this.” Lila said, her excitement bubbling to the surface as she stepped into the inviting warmth of the living room. The scent of popcorn wafted through the air, instantly making her feel at home. “Perfect timing! I’ve got the music ready and snacks prepped,” Avery said, leading Lila toward the cozy kitchen. “And I even found the perfect playlist for us. We’ll get you all glammed up in no time.” Lila laughed, setting her backpack on a nearby chair. “Thanks! I figured it would be easier to get ready here instead of at home, especially with everything going on.” Avery’s smile faltered for a moment, yes you need to fill me in while I get you transformed into the birthday girl you deserve to be!” As Lila unpacked her backpack, she felt excited. The atmosphere in Avery’s home was different—lighter, filled with laughter and carefree energy it was a welcome relief. She couldn’t wait to enjoy the night.
