Chapter 6

1792 Words
As Julian returned with his new desk set to be delivered in an hour, he spotted Lucas and Stephan nearly sprinting for the door. “Where’s the fire?” Julian asked stepping in front of the pair. “Oh… Welcome back alpha.“ Lucas stammered. “We were just leaving on an mission from Carter.” Julian stood a little straighter at Stephan’s words. If Carter was sending them somewhere it had to have something to do with the thief. “Pray tell.” Stephan and Lucas exchanged a look. “It seems you two thought that was an optional suggestion.” He saw them squirm under his glare. “Let’s try again. Where are you going?” Julian had to hold himself back as they again had a silent exchange. The only thing that saved their hides was that Lucas opened his mouth. “Carter found where the thief is staying. We’re going to retrieve him.” “Why didn’t he tell me?” Julian stepped to go ask the man in question but stopped. “I’ll ask when we get back.” he turned to Minxy “Cancel my appointments for the rest of the day.” When she nodded, he turned back to the two wolves. “Let’s go.” They exchanged a wary glance but gave no argument. Julian climbed into the driver’s seat of his black jeep when he realized that he didn’t know where he was going. He waited impatiently for Lucas and Stephan to get to their car. He wanted to yell at them to hurry up but refrained. He would save his energy for when they caught the thief. After they had piled into the other car Lucas sped out of the parking lot with Julian following closely behind. It didn’t take long to drive to an apartment complex by the name of Breeze Whirl. The apartment complex wasn’t far from the bank. Julian found his anger spiking with every short mile. When he realized how short the distance was, his rage doubled with every minute. As they sat in front of the unsuspecting apartment complex Julian watched through the rear window as Stephan and Lucas seemed to argue about something. Julian was very close to saying screw waiting and just stepping out of his own car knocking on every door till the thief answered. To think that the thief had been this close to his bank this entire time. They had the gall to rob from him while sitting right under his nose. The rage in him swelled to the point where he was barely keeping his wolf under the surface. His fists squeezed the steering wheel as he felt his claws lengthen and sink into the material. There was a tap on his window that brought him out of his thoughts. Lucas was standing next to the window, it seemed he and Stephan had finished whatever they’d been arguing about. He also seemed to be displeased with the result. “What are we waiting for? Which apartment is it?” Julian demanded opening his door. “Alpha…” Lucas ran his hand over his hair and down the back of his neck. “There’s no tactful way to say this so I’m going to say this untactfully and hope you see reason.” He let out a big sigh. “We think you should stay out here and let us go retrieve the thief.” “Do you now?” a growl slipped from Julian’s lips. “We have to retrieve the thief without drawing attention.” “And you think I will draw attention.” Lucas glanced at the deep gashes on the steering wheel then at the people passing by who stared at Julian who was growling. Julian sat back clearing his throat. “I think the minute you see the thief you will want to get information out of them instantly. All logic will not matter in that moment. What if the thief has a gun?” That was bullshit they both knew a tiny gun wouldn’t kill Julian. That being said, he did see Lucas’ point that he was making in a roundabout way. “Alpha, let us do our job. The quicker we apprehend the thief the faster you will get your treasure back.” Julian sighed turning his head to find it within himself to see reason. As he stared out the window taking slow deep breaths suddenly all of what little calm he’d mustered vanished. He turned back to Lucas grabbing the front of his shirt yanking him forward so they were nearly nose to nose. “There are Fairies at our seven. I will get rid of them. You two go through the back just in case we have any more visitors.” He whispered so only Lucas could hear. “I will get the thief myself. Where is the complex they’re at?” Julian yelled next. “Opturn complex.” “Don’t you ever talk to me like that.” Julian projected the snarl, he shoved Lucas away roughly. “Get back to the bank. I can’t stand to look at you right now.” Lucas ducked his head slinking back to the other car. When he got into the car Julian watched the exchange then they started the car. While they started to drive in the direction of the bank Julian made a U turn driving in the opposite direction. As he drove away he looked in the rearview mirror to make sure the fairies were following. His eyes strayed to an attractive female with short dark hair coming down the front stairs of the complex. His eyes lingered not because she was the most stunning person in the world, more so that she wore a tight dress and shoes that were much too large for her. The odd pairing had his eyes lingering a moment before he focused back of the fairies who had begun tailing him. “Better keep up, don’t want to miss the thief.” Julian whispered pressing his foot on the gas. A black SUV waited only a moment before giving chase. Julian took wild random turns trying to appear mad without losing sight of his pursues. Lucky for him they seemed to be good at tailing him he did not have to make it obvious he knew they were following. They were always within his eyesight. His target building was Coming up soon. He hoped that Lucas had gotten the thief because h e was sure that they would soon figure out that he was just leading them on a wild goose chase. They would abandon him and go back to the apartments to stop his capture of the thief. Every group in the city had been waiting hundreds of years for a chance like this. There was no depth to which they wouldn’t sink to obtain the jewel. War had always loomed on the horizon between the groups that divided the city. Peace was flimsy at best, the treaty was only as trustworthy as the beings behind it. Considering none of the groups had ever or would ever trust each other it was only a matter of time. The tinder for war had always been there and the unknowing thief might had just made enough sparks to start the blaze. Over the years there had been many attempts to steal the jewel from all the groups. He was able to stop them at every turn through surveillance knowing when and where they were planning to strike. Julian berated himself for not watching the dwarfs more closely. He hadn’t gaged them as enough of a threat to bear watching closely. They weren’t large in number and made up the least amount of land in the city. They slipped through the cracks and taken him by surprise. The fact that the jewel heist had been successful made the situation all the more volatile. Even after he managed to get the jewel back others would think that since it had been stolen once it can be stolen again. It would make these coming years a nightmare. He would have to double the security around the jewel for the foreseeable future. The good Hiring he saw coming out of this was that it had e Exposed an Enemy he hadn’t been aware of. Armed with this new information and the knowledge of the blind spots the thief would tell them, he would be ready. Julian almost smiled despite his current mood when the car tailing him suddenly made a U-turn. It sped in the opposite direction. He took this to mean that Lucas had captured the thief and was currently heading back to the bank. He made his own turn heading back to the bank. He raced back to the bank running almost every redlight. He made it back to just after Lucas and Stephan it seemed. He drove into the underground parking that led to where the pack operated. Their car was already parked. He quickly parked and exited his car entering through the concealed door set behind some bricks. As he entered, he found Stephan talking to Carter. Carter who had seemed to have waited patiently as possible in a situation like this, stood on the opposite side of the room. Julian knew he’d have just about walked a hole in his floor if it were him. “We got him!” The wolf proclaimed to as Lucas dragged in a tied-up shivering body closer to where Carter stood. “Him?” Carter stared at the wolf in confusion which also caused Julian confusion. “Yeah, we went to the apartment and followed the scent to its owner.” Lucas spoke this time gesturing to the frightened male tied up beside him. Carter pinched the bridge of his nose before inhaling deeply and releasing it slowly. “What about the female scent?” “We ignored it so we could go after him.” Stephan nodded towards the guy. “You said the owner, his scent was all over the apartment. When asked he said it was his.” He clarified frowning. “Of course, she wouldn’t take someone to her home.” Carter chuckled. Julian wonder a moment if Carter had lost his mind saw nothing funny about this situation. The thief’s scent was all over the male. “I’d bet money the he knows little to nothing about the female he was sleeping with.” Carter finally sighed. “How did you know about the female scent?” Stephan probed. “I know about it, because that is the scent I wanted you to follow.” Carter sighed again. “She is the thief.”
