CHAPTER 11: The Morning That Changes Everything

1185 Words
I locked the door. Twice. Then stood there… staring at it. “Not everything outside this room is safe.” His words wouldn’t leave my head. What did that even mean? I turned slowly, scanning the room like I expected something to jump out of the shadows. Nothing. Just silence. Soft lights. That same perfect, untouched space. And yet— I didn’t feel completely safe anymore. Great. “Now I’m paranoid,” I muttered, rubbing my arms. I walked back toward the bed, but my steps felt slower this time. More cautious. Like something had shifted. Like I was missing something important. I sat down. Then lay back. “Just sleep,” I whispered again. And somehow… This time— Sleep came. I didn’t know how long I was out. Minutes. Hours. But when I woke up— Something felt wrong. Too quiet. My eyes opened slowly. The room was brighter now. Morning. But it wasn’t the light that woke me. It was the feeling. That instinct. Like something wasn’t right. I sat up immediately. Listened. Nothing. Still. Too still. My heart started beating faster. “Okay… relax,” I whispered. But my body didn’t listen. Because that feeling— It was still there. Watching. Waiting. I swung my legs off the bed slowly. The floor felt cold. Grounding. I walked toward the door. Paused. Then unlocked it. Carefully. The hallway was empty. Quiet. Normal. Too normal. I stepped out. “Hello?” I called softly. No response. Of course not. I walked further down the hall. Everything looked the same as last night. Clean. Perfect. Silent. “Lucien?” I called. Nothing. I frowned. Where was he? For someone who didn’t seem to leave anything to chance… This felt strange. I kept walking. Toward the main area. And that’s when I heard it. Voices. Low. Controlled. From the living area. I slowed down instantly. Something about the tone— Wasn’t casual. Wasn’t relaxed. It was serious. Dangerous. I moved closer quietly. “…I told you to handle it.” Lucien. His voice was different. Colder. Sharper. “I did,” another voice replied. Male. Nervous. “But they’re not backing down.” Silence. Then— A sound. Something hitting the table. Hard. “Then you didn’t handle it,” Lucien said. My breath caught. I had never heard his voice like that before. Controlled. But underneath it— Something darker. “They know about her,” the man added quickly. Everything inside me froze. Her? Me? “They shouldn’t,” Lucien replied. “We tried to contain it, but the information is already spreading.” My heart started racing. “What exactly do they know?” Lucien asked. A pause. Then— “That she’s pregnant.” My breath hitched sharply. I stepped back instinctively. No. No, no, no— How? “How far has it spread?” Lucien’s voice dropped lower. “Not public yet… but certain people are aware.” Silence. Heavy. Dangerous. “And the father?” Lucien asked. “They’re not sure… but they suspect it’s you.” My entire body went cold. This wasn’t just personal anymore. This was something bigger. Something I didn’t understand. “Find out who started it,” Lucien said. Calm again. Too calm. “And shut it down.” “Yes, sir.” Footsteps. Coming closer. Panic hit instantly. I turned quickly, moving back toward the hallway— But it was too late. He saw me. Lucien stopped. His eyes locked onto mine. And everything went still. The man behind him froze too. Silence filled the space. Heavy. Sharp. “You’re awake,” Lucien said. Like nothing just happened. Like I hadn’t heard everything. “I…” My voice felt dry. “I didn’t mean to—” “How much did you hear?” Straight to the point. My chest tightened. “Enough,” I admitted. Silence. The man shifted uncomfortably. Lucien didn’t look away from me. “Leave,” he said to the other man. “Sir—” “Now.” The man didn’t argue again. He left quickly. The door closed. And suddenly— It was just us. Again. But this time… Everything felt different. “What does that mean?” I asked quietly. He didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he walked toward me. Slow. Controlled. Intentional. Every step making my heart beat faster. “You weren’t supposed to hear that,” he said. “That’s not an answer.” “No.” “Then give me one.” Silence. I clenched my hands. “You said I was safe here,” I continued. “That didn’t sound safe.” “It is.” “How?” “Because I’m handling it.” “That’s not enough!” My voice rose before I could stop it. “This isn’t just about me anymore, is it?” I asked. “This is bigger.” A pause. “Yes.” The honesty hit harder than a lie would have. “How big?” I whispered. Silence. Then— “Big enough that you don’t need to know everything yet.” “That’s not your decision!” “It is if knowing puts you in danger.” “I’m already in danger!” The words echoed. Sharp. Real. Because now— I understood. This wasn’t just about a child. It wasn’t just about us. There were other people involved. Watching. Waiting. And somehow… I had just stepped into something I couldn’t walk out of. “You should have told me,” I said quietly. “I was going to.” “When?” “Today.” Of course. “After I already got pulled deeper into this?” I asked. Silence. Because he didn’t deny it. My chest tightened. “You don’t get to decide how much I can handle,” I said. “No,” he agreed. Then— “But I do decide how much risk I allow near you.” That line again. Control. Protection. I didn’t know which one it was anymore. “Why does it matter so much?” I asked. A pause. Then— “Because it’s not just your life anymore.” My breath caught. The child. Always the child. But somehow… It didn’t feel like that was the only reason. Not anymore. Not after the way he looked at me. Not after the way his voice changed when he said those words. “This is too much,” I whispered. “I know.” “I didn’t sign up for this.” “I know.” “Then why does it feel like I don’t have a choice?” Silence. Because deep down— We both knew the answer. “You do,” he said finally. “But whatever you choose…” A pause. “…this won’t go away.” A chill ran down my spine. Because for the first time— I believed him. And that was the moment I realized— My life didn’t just change the night I met him. It changed the moment I stayed. And now… there was no going back.
