The following day, after Ben was discharged from the hospital, Mrs. Beckett wasted no time in organizing a meeting. She wanted to express her gratitude to Hazel and clarify the events that took place.
The meeting involved Ben, Dominic and William Beckett, as well as Hazel and her parents.
As they gathered in Beckett's living room, the atmosphere was tense. Mrs. Beckett turned slightly in her seat to face Hazel. She cleared her throat, ready to begin.
"First and foremost, I want to express my deepest gratitude to Hazel," She began, her voice trembling with emotion. "Hazel acted selflessly, putting her own life on the line to save my son. I will forever be in her debt."
Hazel's parents looked at her with proud smiles, their eyes brimming with tears of pride. They squeezed her hand, providing comfort and support.
Mrs. Beckett continued, her tone becoming slightly more stern. "However, I must also address the fact that Hazel pushed me aside in her haste to save Ben. While I understand her desperation, I am his mother, and I was worried the most about him. I implore you, Hazel, to remember the importance of following proper procedures in situations like these."
Hazel's face flushed with a mix of embarrassment and remorse. She nodded, realizing the gravity of her actions. "I'm sorry, Mrs. Beckett, but I didn't know he was your son at the time."
Mrs. Beckett's expression softened as she regarded Hazel with understanding. "Thank you for your apology, Hazel. I know your intentions were pure. Just remember, it's important to assess the situation and consider all the variables before taking action. I mean you could have been hurt, besides the diver was just seconds away."
Ben, who had been silent throughout the meeting, finally spoke up. "I just want to say thank you, Hazel. Without your quick thinking and bravery, I wouldn't be here right now. I owe you my life."
Hazel blushed and looked down, feeling a mix of humility and happiness. "I'm glad I could help, Ben. It was an instinctive reaction, and I'm thankful that it turned out well."
Mr. William, who had been observing the proceedings quietly, interjected. "Hazel, I must admit, you left us all astounded by your actions. It takes incredible courage and selflessness to put someone else's life before your own. We are all grateful for what you did."
Hazel smiled timidly, appreciating Mr. Garrett's recognition and support.
As the meeting drew to a close, Mrs. Beckett turned her attention back to Hazel. "Now, onto the question that's been weighing on my mind. How did you know it was Ben struggling in the pool? You seemed to recognize him immediately, and he hasn't been home since you started working with us."
Hazel took a deep breath, realizing she couldn't avoid addressing the truth any longer. "I must confess, Mrs. Beckett, I didn't know it was Ben at first. It was only when you called out his name that I realized who he was."
Mrs. Beckett's eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "But how did you even know his name, Hazel?"
Hazel hesitated for a moment before deciding to share the whole story. "I met him yesterday when I was making his bed. I thought he was a newly employed worker. He told me his name then."
Mrs. Beckett's eyes widened in surprise, and a small smile curled at the edges of her lips. "So, you two had already met before this incident?"
Hazel nodded, her cheeks turning slightly pink.
Mrs. Beckett exchanged a knowing glance with her husband, a mix of amusement and warmth in her eyes. "Okay, Mr and Mrs Rosewood, Thank you so much for your time."
"Bye hazel" she said as she gave her a hug.
"I will see them off" Ben said as he stood up and walked out with them.
As Hazel exited the Beckett residence with her parents, Ben followed closely behind, his steps tentative. He wanted to have a private conversation with Hazel, to address his own guilt and express his gratitude.
"Hey, Hazel," Ben called out gently, catching up to her. "Can we talk for a moment?"
Hazel turned to face him, her eyes still slightly puffy from the tears shed in the meeting. Nervousness fluttered in her stomach as she nodded. "Sure, Ben. What is it?"
Ben took a deep breath, searching for the right words. "I wanted to apologize to you for not letting you know who I was when we first met. I should have been honest from the start."
Hazel offered him a small smile. "It's okay, Ben. I understand why you didn't reveal your identity."
Ben nodded, appreciative of Hazel's understanding. He shifted his weight from one foot to the other, gathering the courage to ask the question that had been on his mind. "Hazel, during the incident at the pool, did you...were you worried about me?"
Hazel's face flushed with embarrassment, and she avoided his gaze momentarily. "Of course, I was worried, Ben. You were struggling."
A mixture of relief and something deeper flickered in Ben's eyes. "And did...did you cry because you were scared for me?"
Hazel bit her lip, her heart pounding. She let out a nervous chuckle. "I cried because I was scared for you, yes. It was an overwhelming experience, and I was just grateful that you were okay."
Ben's lips curved into a soft smile. "Thank you, Hazel. I'm sorry for putting you in that position, but I'm also incredibly grateful that you were there for me." He said, moving dangerously close to her.
"I should go." she said as she shyly ran into the guest house.
