Mike stood by the door, the cool night air brushing against his face as he said his goodbyes to Nora’s grandparents. Her grandmother gave him a grateful nod, though her eyes were still filled with concern.
“Thank you, Alpha,” her grandfather said quietly. “We owe you.”
Mike gave a tight-lipped smile, his mind elsewhere. “No need for thanks. I’ll be checking in again soon. Keep her safe until then.”
They watched as Mike stepped off the porch and disappeared into the dark woods. As soon as he was out of sight, he shifted effortlessly into his wolf form, Logan. The powerful creature’s dark fur blended with the shadows of the forest as he sprinted through the trees, the wind rushing through his fur.
“You shouldn’t have let her come here,” Logan growled in Mike’s mind, his voice deep and primal. “It’s dangerous, and you know it.”
“I couldn’t stop her, how would I know that she would have ran away from New York to here when we have not been in contact for all those years. ” Mike replied internally as he pushed through the underbrush. “She’s grown. She’s different now.”
“She’s the one from the prophecy, Mike,” Logan reminded him, the wolf's thoughts sharp and clear. “We’ve always known this moment would come. But are you ready for it? She’s not just a girl anymore. She’s... ours.”
Mike hesitated, his paws slowing as Logan’s words hit him. His wolf had always been protective of her, even when they were younger. But now, after all these years, the bond was undeniable, and the weight of the prophecy loomed over them both.
“I’m not sure I am,” Mike confessed. “But she’s here now. There’s no turning back.”
Logan huffed in agreement, but there was an undertone of frustration. “You’re lying to yourself, Mike. You’ve wanted her since the moment you saw her again. But what about the king.”
Mike pushed forward, his wolf running at full speed again. “I’ll figure it out.”
As he reached the edge of the forest, the cabin came back into his thoughts and the picture of Nora came back into his mind.
Silently, Mike shifted back into his human form, his body tense with anticipation. He ran back into the cabin. His heart raced as he looked up at the window to Nora’s room, the light faint but still visible.
With a surge of adrenaline, he climbed up the side of the house with ease and slipped through the window, his movements silent and calculated.
Nora was lying in bed, her eyes wide open. She must have sensed his presence because she sat up quickly, her heart racing as she spotted him in the dim light.
“Mike?” she whispered, her voice laced with surprise.
He stepped closer, his bare feet making no sound on the wooden floor. “I couldn’t leave without seeing you,” he murmured, his voice low and hushed.
Nora’s eyes softened, but there was a wariness in her gaze. “I thought you left.”
“I did... but something pulled me back,” he said, sitting on the edge of her bed. The space between them crackled with unspoken tension. “It’s been so long, Nora.”
She nodded, pulling her blanket tighter around her shoulders. “I know. A lot has changed.”
Mike leaned closer, his blue eyes locking onto hers. “We both have. But some things haven’t.”
There was a silence between them, heavy and loaded with everything they weren’t saying. Nora felt her pulse quicken, the closeness of him stirring feelings she thought were buried. “I never expected to see you again,” she admitted quietly.
“Neither did I,” Mike confessed, his fingers brushing against hers. “But now that you’re here... I don’t want to let you go.”
His touch sent a shiver down her spine, and before she could think, their lips met in a soft, desperate kiss. It was as though all the years apart vanished, the intensity of their connection igniting in an instant. Mike’s hand cupped her face, pulling her closer as the kiss deepened, their bodies moving as if they’d been waiting for this moment all along.
But just as the heat between them grew, Nora suddenly pulled back, breathless, her heart pounding.
“Mike, wait,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “I can’t... I have a boyfriend. Back in New York.”
The words hit him like a bucket of cold water, and Mike froze, his gaze searching hers. “You... have a boyfriend?”
Nora nodded, guilt flooding her expression. “I didn’t expect any of this to happen. I thought... I thought we were just old friends. But now...”
Mike ran a hand through his hair, stepping back slightly, his jaw tightening. “I didn’t know.”
“I’m sorry,” Nora whispered, her voice filled with regret. “I didn’t mean for this to get complicated.”
Mike took a deep breath, his emotions swirling between anger, frustration, and the undeniable pull he still felt toward her. “It’s fine,” he said, though his voice was strained. “We’ll figure this out. But... you need to know, Nora. You’re not just someone who wandered into my life again.”
Nora looked up at him, her eyes wide with confusion. “What do you mean?”
Mike hesitated, then leaned in close, his voice barely above a whisper. “There’s a reason you’re here. A reason why you can’t just walk away.”
