Thane gripped his phone tighter as he dialed Mira’s number again, his thumb trembling slightly. It rang once. Twice. No answer. The amusement park was obviously close to shutting down for the day. Lights dimmed. Rides shut off one by one. Families walked out in pairs little by little, their laughter fading as they walked out. But Thane and Eli remained restless. Anxious. Alone. Eli had grown quiet in his arms, sensing the change in his father’s attitude. “Is Mommy lost?” he questioned. “No,” Thane said, kissing the top of his head. “She’s just... taking time.” But every second felt heavier than the last. Thane retraced every place they had walked by. He retraced the ice cream shop down to where she had started off, but he couldn't find her. He remembered a little stream nearby.
