The Rogue's Gambit

Chapter 3 Elias spent the next twenty-four hours balancing on a knife's edge. Above ground, he played the role of the resolute Alpha, calmly reviewing alliance treaties with an icy, skeptical Elara. He assured her of the Moonwood’s security and dismissed the "wounded scout" as a minor detail, but he felt her calculating gaze on him always. Her scent was a sharp, jealous vinegar, and it permeated the manor. Below ground, his wolf, Kael, was restless. The Mate bond was a constant, insistent thrum that pulled Elias back to the secure holding cell. He returned just after midnight, finding Lyra awake. She was sitting upright, the Healer’s herbs still sweet on the air, her fierce eyes betraying no fear, only deep-seated fatigue. “Elara knows,” Lyra stated without preamble. Elias leaned against the stone wall, already tired of the political games. “She suspects a trespasser. She is ambitious. She senses the bond. It changes nothing yet.” “It changes everything,” Lyra countered, her voice low and passionate. “She senses the bond, and she senses me. I am Garrett’s daughter. I am chaos. Your Beta, Marcus, knows it. Elara knows it. And deep down, your wolf knows that claiming me will destroy this pack.” “My wolf knows you are mine,” Elias corrected, stepping closer. He reached for her hand. This time, Lyra didn't pull away. The moment their skin touched, the electric certainty of the bond flared, calming the turmoil inside both of them a brief, perfect moment of peace. “Stop fighting this part,” Elias urged. “Stop fighting us. Your father sent you here. Tell me why. Tell me the truth about the Iron-Claw, and I will protect you both you and this pack.” Lyra closed her eyes, the fight finally draining out of her. She took a shaky breath, then opened her eyes and met his gaze. “My father… Garrett… he is not just a Rogue leader. He’s building an army,” she admitted, her voice dropping to a near-whisper. “Not just wolves, but humans who believe they have been wronged by the pack structure. He calls it the 'Purge.' He plans to wipe out the established packs starting with Moonwood.” Elias felt a cold dread settle in his stomach. “We knew they were organizing. But an army? Why send you, then?” Lyra finally let go of the silver locket she’d been clutching since Elias found her. She slid the tarnished piece of metal across the stone floor toward him. “He didn’t send me as a spy. He sent me as a sacrifice,” she said bitterly. “I was banished. For weeks I was kept on starvation rations. He told me to carry that locket and use the last of my strength to cross your border. The cut on my arm was a deliberate wound from his own blade, just deep enough to make me bleed, but not kill me immediately.” Elias picked up the locket. It was heavy, and cold. “Why this locket? What does it do?” “It doesn’t do anything,” Lyra scoffed. “It’s a target. The locket has a unique scent it’s made of a rare alloy infused with a specific root that is easily trackable by a trained Rogue scout. He knew your patrols would eventually find me. He planned on you either killing me instantly, thus provoking immediate war, or keeping me locked up as a captive.” Elias’s hands shook with rage, not at Lyra, but at Garrett's calculated cruelty. “A distraction. A decoy.” “Worse,” Lyra whispered, tears finally glazing her eyes. “Garrett planned to use me to lead his forces to the one place he needs to hit: your armory and stores. He timed my banishment to coincide with the night of your biggest transport.” She pointed a finger at the locket in Elias’s palm. “If I was captured, the lockets’ tracking scent would lead his top scout, a wolf named Kain, directly to the manor. Kain is scheduled to cross the line at dawn he will use my scent to find a weak point and infiltrate.” Elias stared at the locket, then at the woman before him. She wasn't a spy; she was bait. She hadn't chosen to betray him her father had chosen her fate. The terrifying truth of the Rogue’s Gambit was now laid bare. “What about the Blood Moon alliance?” Elias demanded, his mind racing. “It's why the attack is tomorrow morning. Your pack will be distracted by Elara’s presence, the tension of the betrothal, and the movement of the large supply train from the Riverbend Pack. Garrett will hit when your focus is divided.” Elias didn’t hesitate. He knew he couldn't trust any other wolf with this level of sensitive information, especially not Marcus, who still viewed Lyra with dangerous suspicion. He released the control lock on the cell door. “Get up. You’re coming with me.” “Where are we going?” Lyra asked, surprised, scrambling off the cot. “To find Kain before he finds you,” Elias said grimly. “And we are going to use your ‘bait’ to set a trap. You know his scent; you know his movements. I need your eyes on the ground. Your life has just become forfeit, Lyra. If you run, I will hunt you myself.” “I won’t run,” she said, her moss-green eyes hardening with resolve. She no longer spoke as a desperate victim, but as a survivor determined to strike back. “Garrett has used me for the last time.” They moved through the early morning forest. Elias was in his magnificent, powerful black wolf form, Kael, a silent shadow among the trees. Lyra followed on foot, surprisingly light and agile, her human senses heightened by the bond she still tried to deny. She held the silver locket clasped in her hand, allowing its faint tracking scent to guide them. They found the scent of the Rogue scout, Kain, precisely where Lyra predicted moving along a seldom-used deer trail leading directly toward the Moonwood armory. Kael shifted back instantly, Elias’s muscles bunching as he resumed his human form. “He’s too close. He’s moving fast. We’ll be too late to intercept him at the armory.” Lyra scanned the ridge line above them, her breath pluming in the crisp air. “There’s an old supply cavern on the northern ridge. It’s perfect cover. If we force him up there, he’ll be trapped against the cliffs.” Elias nodded, admiration warring with desperation. This woman, the enemy’s daughter, was not just a mate; she was a brilliant tactician. “Go!” he commanded, shifting back into Kael. Lyra took off running, the locket now held high, acting as the perfect lure. Kael followed, sticking to her shadow. The confrontation was swift and brutal. Kain, a large, scarred brown wolf, was caught completely by surprise when Kael launched himself from the shadows. The two wolves met in a savage clash of teeth and fur. Kael had the advantage of Alpha strength, but Kain fought with the desperate ferocity of a wolf with no pack to protect. Kael eventually pinned Kain beneath him, his jaws clamped down hard on the Rogue’s throat, but not before Kain managed to let out one, high-pitched, echoing howl the signal. The attack was launched. Elias shifted back, panting, standing over the groaning, defeated Rogue. He didn't have time to kill Kain. Lyra sprinted up the ridge. “He gave the signal! They’re coming! The main force will be at the manor in minutes!” “Marcus!” Elias roared into his mind, using the Alpha link to snap his Beta awake. “Full perimeter defense! The Iron-Claw is attacking the north and east lines! Secure the manor!” Elias looked at Lyra. The war was here, and it was her fault, but she was also his only weapon. “You said you know his tactics. Where will Garrett be?” Lyra didn't hesitate. “Garrett never fights on the front lines. He’ll be coming through the main ceremonial path, masked by the confusion. He will be hunting you, Alpha.” Elias grabbed her hand, the bond burning through his skin, giving him unnatural focus. He had to trust her, or everything was lost. “Then we meet him there,” Elias declared, his eyes blazing with Alpha fire. “You and I. Let the Rogue Alpha see the price of his game. Come, Lyra. We fight for Moonwood.” He shifted fully, the great black wolf standing beside the human woman who had betrayed her family to save his. Elias charged toward the manor, the sounds of battle already echoing in the woods behind them. The stage is set! The Rogues are attacking, Lyra is fighting alongside Elias, and the confrontation with Garrett is imminent.
