The Choice is Made

Chapter 5 The silence that followed the battle was heavier than the fighting itself. The sun, finally clear of the horizon, shone on a scene of c*****e: scattered Rogue bodies, broken timber, and the exhaustion of the Moonwood warriors. Elias, bleeding from Garrett’s final strike but alive, held Lyra close. He was still in his human form, his body scarred and weary, but his spirit was infused with the unshakeable certainty of his Mate. The battle was won, but the cost was now due. Lyra’s face was smeared with dirt and blood. She looked up at him, her eyes clear and decisive. “It’s not over, Elias. You won the war, but you lost the peace. You have to face the Beta and the council. You have to make the choice public.” He nodded. “I know.” The Severed Alliance The first confrontation was with Marcus. Elias found his Beta in the makeshift triage station, directing the triage of the wounded. Marcus looked up, his expression a complicated mix of relief that his Alpha lived and fury over his actions. “The Iron-Claw threat is finished,” Elias stated simply. “Yes, thanks to a reckless gamble and the timely help of the enemy’s daughter,” Marcus retorted, his voice tight. “But the Riverbend Pack has withdrawn. Elara broke the alliance. She’s on the move, and she’s taking her forces with her. We are exposed, Elias. You chose a bond that cost us the protection of two major packs.” “She chose politics over a true war,” Elias countered. “The alliance was fragile. It would have broken eventually.” “And what of her father, the Riverbend Alpha? He will demand answers. He will see this as an insult and a declaration of war,” Marcus warned. “You cannot lead us into a triple-pack war for this woman.” Elias stepped back, the weight of his Alpha responsibility settling heavily back onto his shoulders. “Marcus, I didn’t just gain a Mate. I gained an asset. Lyra provided the precise intelligence that saved this pack. I will face the Riverbend Alpha. But first, I will face the council. I need you by my side.” Marcus hesitated, looking from the strong, resolute Elias to Lyra, who stood a little distance away, her expression defiant. Slowly, the Beta’s shoulders slumped in weary acceptance. “You’re the Alpha,” Marcus conceded. “But if you do this, there is no turning back.” The Council of Elders The pack council was convened in the scarred, smoke-filled great hall. The elders and senior warriors gathered, their faces grim. Elara was there too, having decided to stay and witness the Alpha's expected downfall. She stood rigid, her clothes pristine, radiating cold vengeance. Elias walked in and faced them, holding himself with the unyielding composure of his rank. He did not bring Lyra in immediately; this was a political trial he had to win alone. “The Iron-Claw Rogues have been defeated,” Elias announced, his voice clear and resonant despite the exhaustion. “Garrett is dead, and his forces are scattered. Moonwood is safe.” A quiet murmur rippled through the room. Then, Elara stepped forward, her voice cutting through the murmuring with sharp precision. “And at what cost, Alpha Knight? We all know the truth. You harbored a spy, the daughter of the Rogue Alpha. I, as the intended Luna and future ally of this pack, withdrew the Riverbend forces to save them from your madness. I demand you publicly reject this woman and allow the council to pass judgment on her for treason.” The elders’ faces showed agreement. Rejecting a fated mate was agonizing, a soul-wrenching agony that could weaken an Alpha for life, but it was sometimes necessary for the pack’s survival. Elias held up a hand, silencing the gathering. “I will address your demands, Elara. But first, you will address mine.” He looked directly at her, his Alpha gaze unflinching. “You broke an oath of alliance during a hostile invasion. You abandoned Moonwood when we needed you most. You chose political gain over the lives of innocent wolves. For that cowardice, and for questioning my authority on my own land, I formally and publicly reject your political alliance and your hand in marriage. Go home, Elara. Moonwood will rise without the Riverbend Pack.” Elara gasped, her composure finally cracking. The elders exchanged horrified whispers. Elias had burned the bridge, and the flames were spectacular. “You have signed your pack's death warrant!” Elara shrieked, backing away. The Declaration Elias ignored her retreating form. He turned to the pack council, his gaze sweeping over every face. “I was told that my greatest duty was to find a stable Luna and forge alliances to protect you. I did my duty, and it failed us,” Elias said, his voice dropping to a powerful, confessional whisper. “Political alliances are brittle. But the power of Fate is eternal.” He nodded to Marcus. The Beta, though reluctant, understood his cue. Marcus walked to the great hall doors and pulled them open. Lyra walked in. She was no longer the wounded victim. She stood tall, meeting the hundreds of hostile eyes with defiant calm. She was still in the clothes she wore to battle, a striking contrast to the ordered life of the manor. Elias walked to her side, their bodies aligning perfectly. The physical presence of their combined bond was a palpable force that settled over the silent room. “This is Lyra,” Elias declared, placing a hand protectively on her shoulder. “Daughter of a defeated Rogue, yes. But also the woman who delivered the intelligence that allowed us to trap and destroy her father. She proved her loyalty with her blood on the battlefield.” He took her hand, lifting it for all to see. “My duty has always been to the survival of the Moonwood Pack. My wolf chose her. My heart demands her. And my mind now knows that a pack built on true strength and an unbreakable, fated bond is stronger than any political maneuver.” Elias looked at the stunned elders, his final, decisive choice ringing with Alpha authority. “I will face the Riverbend Alpha. I will deal with the consequences. But I will do it with my Luna by my side. I have made my impossible choice. I claim Lyra. She is the Luna of Moonwood.” The silence in the hall stretched until a young warrior in the back, one who had seen Lyra risk her life on the ridge, dropped his head in a low, respectful bow. Slowly, one by one, the other warriors followed suit. The elders, seeing the warriors submit and feeling the compelling truth of the Mate bond in the air, could do nothing but accept. Lyra looked at Elias, her eyes shimmering with emotion. She had come to die, but instead, she had been chosen to rule. Her hand tightened on his, and the pure, fierce joy of the accepted Mate bond washed away the pain and exhaustion. Elias smiled a true, unburdened Alpha smile, the first the pack had seen in years. He had risked everything, but standing beside his Mate, he knew their fight had just begun.
