Chapter 8 The Enemy Attack

355 Words
Week 12. Doctor’s appointment. “Twins are perfect, Mrs. Kane. Strong heartbeats.” The doctor smiled. “Want to know the genders?” Adrian’s hand tightened on mine. “Yes.” “Two boys.” Adrian exhaled like he’d been holding his breath for 32 years. “Two sons.” We were walking to the car when it happened. Black SUV. Tinted windows. Screeching tires. Three men jumped out. Masks. Guns. “Mrs. Kane. Our boss wants to talk about the heirs.” Adrian moved faster than I’d ever seen. He shoved me behind him and took a bullet to the shoulder without a sound. “RUN!” he roared at me. I didn’t. I can’t explain why. I grabbed the gun from his waist and fired. I’d never held a gun. But I hit one of them in the leg. Adrian stared at me, blood soaking his shirt. “You…” More security poured out of Kane Tower. Gunfire. Shouting. When it was over, Adrian was in my arms, bleeding on the pavement. “Why didn’t you run?” he gasped. “Because they’re my sons too,” I sobbed. “And you’re…” I couldn’t say it. His bloody hand touched my face. “Say it, Lily.” “You’re my husband.” His eyes closed. But he was smiling. At the hospital, the doctor stitched him up while Adrian refused pain meds. “Need to be awake. If anyone comes for her again—” “Adrian, stop.” I was shaking. “Who was that?” “Victor Romanov.” His jaw ticked. “My rival. He can’t have kids. He wants mine. Wants to raise Kane heirs as Romanovs.” He looked at my stomach. “He’ll never touch them. I swear on my life.” That night, he didn’t sleep on the floor. He pulled me into his hospital bed, careful of my stomach, and held me all night. No kissing. No contract. Just his heartbeat under my ear. Safe. And I realized: I wasn’t just carrying his heirs anymore. I was starting to fall for the ruthless CEO.
