I’d been Mrs. Kane for two weeks. Two weeks of cameras, locked doors, and doctors treating me like a vessel.
Then SHE walked into my prison.
“Adrian, darling.” The voice was sugar and poison. “You didn’t tell me you got married.”
I froze in the penthouse living room. The woman was 6’0 in heels, model-beautiful, wearing diamonds that cost more than my mother’s life.
Vanessa Okoro. Adrian’s ex. Heiress to Okoro Oil.
And she was pregnant.
Her hand rested on a very round, very obvious baby bump. “Five months along. Your son, Adrian. Remember London?”
The glass in my hand shattered.
Adrian went still. That terrifying, deadly still. “Vanessa. We had an agreement.”
“Agreements change when you’re carrying the Kane heir.” She smiled at me like I was dirt. “Oh, you must be the little contract girl. How much did he pay you? N50 million? Cute.”
My stomach dropped. Not from morning sickness. From the truth.
“I’m carrying his child too,” I whispered.
Vanessa laughed. “Honey, you’re carrying a mistake. I’m carrying his LEGACY. The board already knows. Okoro Oil + Kane Group merger. My son gets it all.”
She stepped closer, perfume choking me. “So run back to your slum, little Lily. Some women are wives. Others are just wombs.”
The door opened. Adrian’s head of security. “Sir. The board is calling an emergency meeting. They’ve seen the photos of Miss Okoro at the gala. They want confirmation on the heir.”
Adrian looked at Vanessa. Then at me. His face was stone.
“Get her out,” he told security, pointing at me.
“What?” I couldn’t breathe.
“Take Mrs. Kane to the south wing. She’s not to leave until I say.” He wouldn’t meet my eyes. “And Vanessa… my office. Now.”
Security grabbed my arm.
As they dragged me away, I heard Vanessa purr: “Choose, Adrian. The heiress with a billion-dollar merger… or the cleaner with a contract.”
The south wing door locked behind me. Smaller room. No windows.
Just me, my baby, and the sound of my husband choosing his real heir.
That night, I didn’t sleep.
Because I finally understood: I wasn’t even his first pregnant prisoner.
