Chapter 2

Slipping the binoculars into my backpack, I effortlessly climbed out of the tree I had called my home for nearly a week. I’d be glad to see the back of it, tree’s weren’t exactly comfortable to sleep in, of what little sleep I had got! I had always been good at climbing trees, my older brother had taught me how to climb when i was 4, we would both race up the tree’s surrounding our countryside cottage, trying to beat each other on who could do it the fastest. Jumping the last few feet out of the tree, I rested my forehead on its cool bark, taking a deep breath as I fought against the tears that wanted to fall, no I can’t think of them right now, taking another deep breath of the cool night air, I worked on putting my family’s memory back into that little box in my mind. Regaining my composure I sprinted across the distance to the brick wall. Luckily there were plenty of tree’s surrounding the wall so getting over it was as easy as climbing the right tree, transferring to the wall and lowering myself down on the other side, hopefully land on my feet!  Landing in a crouch I scanned the garden before making my way towards the left side of the building, where the kitchen was and the side door into the house where I picked the simple lock with ease, clearly security wasn’t their top priority! Pulling my night vision googles from the side pocket of my pack, my hand had just touched the door handle when I heard the snap of a twig from behind me. Whirling round, my free hand immediately going to the small handheld taser I kept in my jacket pocket at all times, but as I looked around there was nothing there. “Must be the wildlife” I muttered to myself, having that unnerving feeling of being watched. Slipping on my night vision googles as I quietly slipped in though the kitchen door, I held in my shock at the condition of the inside of the mansion, I had expected to find it to be damp, dusty and generally uncared for to match the outside appearance. Instead it was all sleek walls and slate flooring with a full equipped kitchen that would put a small cafe to shame. As I moved further in I found marble flooring, elegant looking chairs and plush sofas up against the walls surrounded by expensive looking rugs. In the middle of the room was a large wooden table with a chandelier above it and this was only the foyer! I wondered what the other rooms looked like but I didn’t have time to go investigating, I was only here for one purpose. The staircase itself was wide at the bottom, with plush red carpet – which would at least help muffle my footsteps - and wooden railings atop metal spirals. Just another thing to creep me out about this place, why keep the outside looking in such disaray when the inside made it obvious that they had money. Shaking off the odd feeling I advanced up the stairs, where they tapered off to a small corridor that led to the first floor, hopefully any occupants would be asleep now, considering it was the middle of the night.
