"Are you alright?" William found something wrong with me and asked.
I collected my thoughts, but my heart was still beating heavily. "Nothing," I paused, feeling that I was unable to stay here anymore. "Let's go."
Before William could reply, I started pulling him out of the store.
Suddenly I heard a clear voice, "Damn paupers. Don't hang around here if you can't afford anything. Now we've got even more freeloaders with cameras stuck to their head."
"See? I told you they couldn't afford anything. Look what they're wearing now."
"Haha. They should be more familiar with all those flea markets around here."
Each of their sardonic words came into my ears. I stood there with my back on them. I clenched my fists, and my whole body was trembling. I wasn't irritated by them but by myself. What they said was all true, but I couldn't retort. I blamed myself for being such a failure.
"Honey, what are you doing here?" a gentle voice went up, but it wasn't from my brother.
I looked over. Before I saw the face of the speaker, I was in his arms.
On the other side, I heard the surprising voice of saleswomen, "Mr. Wayne."
I was so startled that my eyes widened. "Wayne?" I was confused. Did he call me just now? "What... what did you say just now?"
"Mr. Wayne, what can I do for you today?" one of the saleswomen came to Wayne, but she was completely ignored.
"What's wrong, honey? Are you too excited to hear what I said?" Wayne looked at me with tender eyes as if we were a couple.
"You..." I was at a loss and had no idea what I should say.
"Caroline, who is he?" William suddenly asked. I pushed Wayne away and tried to explain to William, but I was held back to the arms by Wayne again.
"Is he Will? Well... I'm your sister's boyfriend." William looked at me and then turned his eyes at Wayne unbelievably. Even I was surprised by his words.
It occurred to me what had happened that night. He saved me, but he was cold and reserved. What was wrong with him today? Maybe he saw through my confusion, so he whispered to me, "Come on. Work with me."
I suddenly realized that he was doing me another favor. I nodded.
"Now, who's pissing my darling off?" Wayne said this to me, but he glanced at those saleswomen.
At some particular moment, I thought Wayne was in glory. He made me feel a sense of security. I was helpless and wanted to escape from the embarrassing place just now, but he felt like my redemption. With all that being said, I still could not help being sad.
I stole a pinch at my thigh in secret, and tears came down my face instantly. I wore a wronged look and said, "I only wanted a pair of trousers for my brother. But... but they've gone too far!"
"Don't... don't cry. Let's go home. I'm not buying anything here." He almost got me laughing. To make the play real, I didn't explain it to him and kept staying in Wayne's arms.
I peeped from a gap to watch William try to take me away. Wayne stopped him and said, "Leave this to me. Nobody's picking on her."
"But..." William knew he could do nothing, so he stood aside, frowning and watching me worriedly. Fearing I would get called out, I covered my face and kept sobbing.
Wayne patted on my back. He held my hand and strode to a couch. We then sat down.
Wayne's domineering temperament came naturally. He just sat there quietly, but people felt an invisible sense of pressure, just like when I met him the first time.
"Zack's getting too old to manage his subordinates, it seems. It's time for retirement."
He said this in peace, but even I felt scared.
I glanced at the trembling sales team. That didn't feel too good, but I wasn't that angry anymore. I wouldn't stop Wayne, though. I didn't want to be kind because I would only be bullied.
The woman who said I took photos in secret was bold enough. She dared to answer, "Mr. Wayne, we didn't know she... It's our fault. We apologize."
"Yes, we should apologize to the lady. Please do not tell the manager about all this," the others also apologized.
I stared at Wayne. That Zack he mentioned was the manager. Wayne could fire the manager at will, so the shop must belong to the Fox family.
"The Fox family never keeps parasite like you! Go get your pension and f**k off my face!" Wayne said in a cold voice.
"Please don't, Mr. Wayne."
"Mr. Wayne, we were wrong. We won't let it happen again," they kneeled in front of Wayne and started to beg him. They looked somewhat pitiful.
"Ma'am, we are so sorry. Please forgive us."
"We don't want to leave here."
Seeing it was useless to beg Wayne, they turned around to beg my forgiveness.
I gazed at them with cold eyes and said nothing. I had no right to ask Wayne to do anything. Besides, I wouldn't beg Wayne for the sake of those women.
If Wayne didn't show up, they would have treated me even worse.
"Shoo."
After Wayne finished his words, his two guards dragged those women out of the store.
Finally, it was all peaceful again.
Wayne did me a favor once again, and I would mark it. I didn't want to have any relationship with him, and I couldn't bear provoking him.
"Thank you." With me there, that was about all he could say.
Wayne looked at me as if he wore a smile. I was confused why a man like him would like to help me time and again. I wasn't stupid. He didn't help me just because he was ready to help others. But what did he help me for?
I didn't think I should stay in the store much longer. "We gotta get going." Then I pulled on my brother and tried to leave.
"Hold up," Wayne suddenly stopped me.
I turned around and looked at him in confusion. I wondered why he stopped me, and deep down, he was still scary to me.
