CHAPTER EIGHTOutside the British Embassy Cañuela saw an open cabriolet drawn by four horses. It was a vehicle of the latest fashion that she had not seen before in Buenos Aires, but she knew that it was much favoured in London as a smart and rapid mode of travel. The body of the carriage was very light, the wheels large and she knew that it could move with great speed and at the same time great comfort over rough roads. She was, however, surprised to see that Ramón de Lopez was driving four horses in the centre of Buenos Aires. He helped her into the cabriolet and the groom who was holding the horses then jumped up behind them.
