CHAPTER FIVECañuela had packed all her own belongings, also the books and papers which concerned Ramón de Lopez, when she realised that she had left a box of pencils in his sitting room. She entered the cabin and finding it empty crossed to where she had left the pencils on a table opposite the chair where she habitually sat to take dictation. As she picked them up, Ramón de Lopez came through the door that led to his bedroom. He looked at Cañuela and realised that she was ready to go ashore. Today she was wearing the elegant blue travelling gown that had belonged to her mother and because it was warm there was no need for her to cover it with the matching cape which was thickly lined, but instead she intended to put on at the last moment a short jacket that buttoned to the waist.
