The Rumor

Someone posted a photo of them leaving the office. The caption: North & Co.’s mystery creator dating creative director? Mia panicked. Adrian remained calm. “It’s not true.” She nodded. “Right.” He noticed her expression. “Mia.” “It’s fine.” “No, it isn’t.” She smiled. “We’re coworkers.” The words bothered both of them. Then Celeste returned. Adrian’s ex. Elegant. Beautiful. Confident. And far too familiar with him. Mia watched Celeste touch his arm. She felt something unpleasant in her stomach. Jules noticed. “Oh no.” “What?” “You’re jealous.” “I’m not jealous.” “You’re crushing your coffee cup.” Mia looked down. The plastic cup was indeed collapsing in her hand. “Oh.” —THE EX-GIRLFRIEND Celeste wasn’t what Mia expected. She wasn’t cruel. She wasn’t manipulative. She was actually kind. Which somehow made everything worse. Celeste met Mia one afternoon. “So you’re Mia.” Mia swallowed. “You’ve heard of me?” “Adrian talks about you.” Mia’s heart jumped. “He does?” “All the time.” Mia tried not to smile. Celeste smiled knowingly. “He doesn’t realize how obvious he is.” Before Mia could ask what she meant, Adrian appeared. “Celeste.” She looked at him. “We should talk.” Mia quietly walked away. She didn’t know Celeste’s father was sick. She didn’t know why Celeste had returned. And she definitely didn’t know Adrian was about to make a decision that would change everything.
