Chapter ThirteenWe stood perfectly still for some moments. Two carriages tried to overtake us at once and almost collided. ‘What are we waiting for?’ I asked. ‘The horse,’ said Matilda. ‘He needs to … well, you know.’ ‘Now?’ ‘I certainly hope so.’ Before I could decide she was mad and take my chances with the redcoats, the horse let fly with a gushing torrent. I didn’t know where to look, and settled for gazing directly upward. At last the horse was finished, and the driver snapped the reins. The carriage set off toward the Western hill and the sea at a steady pace, but gradually picked up speed until we overtook other people.
