Congratulations on getting the job.

ZOEY'S POV A week had passed since my interview at R Tech Corp. To say I wasn't nervous was a lie because every day I woke up hoping to hear just a call from them. I had already moved to my new house which Alex loved so much, I feared she won't like it. Her life at the new school was going great or at least that's what she said. I could never detect when she was lying or not, she was a good liar. Her poker face got me every single time. "Zoey, you need to stop stressing out. They'll call you and if they don't, it's their loss because they wouldn't get a chance to see how great my daughter is."That was my mom trying to encourage me for the hundredth time today whenever she got me zoned out obviously stressing out. She came to visit me but I know she wanted to see Alex more than she wanted to see me. I was glad she was happy that I gave birth to Alex. "I am not stressing out. I am just spacing out."I lied and to make sure she did not call me out, I changed the subject."Do you think Alex is adapting okay?"I asked what had been bothering me for a while. "of course, why wouldn't she be doing okay? Look at her, she's fine," she said and I looked at Alex watching some cartoons in the sitting room. She seemed fine. I sighed looking at my mother."Maybe I'm just tired and scared that the moving around had affected her. She's fine." the last part was to convince myself. "It's the mother's worrying instincts. You are a good mom Zoey. Nothing like me."My mom said getting emotional. I didn't want this to turn into a sad story so I laughed it out and ignored her by cutting the vegetables I was preparing for dinner. "Mommy...your phone is ringing," Alex yelled but I didn't feel like taking it so I let ring until it rang again and I asked Alex to bring it to me this time. It was a new number. I answered it with a frown." Is this Zoey Cristabel Holland?" the speaker had a feminine voice. I nodded then forgetting she could not see me, I replied."Yes, you are speaking to Zoey." "That's great, I'm calling from R tech corp company...." that made my heart beat so fast as I anticipated to hear the next words."I am informing you that you have been selected to serve as an Employee in the company. Congratulations on getting the job, see you on Monday when you'll begin. You will head straight to the HR department for more details on the job that day. Have a nice day." she hung up but I was frozen. I froze because I couldn't believe my ears."I got the job."I mumbled to myself before believing it and I yelled happily."I got the job, Mom."I said looking at my mom. "Congratulations," she said smiling and I could see how her eyes glittered. She was happy. I calmed down but if I were to be asked, I wanted to hold a small celebratory dinner but it was too late plus, I didn't have friends to call except Olivia who was busy. So I ended up making getting a job less of a deal. My mom left the day after because she had work too. The weekend passed very fast, and it was now Monday morning. I woke up early, earlier than most days. I had double work, I had to get Alex ready for school and I had to get ready for my new job which excited me so much. "I don't want these pancakes Mommy. I want cinnamon-spiced ones."Alex said and I sighed. There was no cinnamon, I needed to get some while shopping for groceries probably tomorrow. I forgot to buy some during the weekend. I looked at Alex wondering what to feed her for breakfast."I'm sorry gummy bear, but there's nothing else to eat except cereals and you hate cereals."I looked at her sad face. "I'll eat cereal but only because today you have work and it's your first day. I will remind you to get my cinnamon when we come back from home from school," she said and I smiled. What a thoughtful kid. She ate cereal and after she was done, I drove her to school. I got my car and I gave back the Lexus to Olivia. My car was just a small one, one that I could afford. My parents are not as rich as hers, I couldn't even afford the life Olivia lives but I was happy Alex embraced our new apartment no matter how small and less luxurious it was. She was into luxury so much it worried me because I could not afford luxurious things. Listening to Taylor Swift songs while driving to work was a good way to relax my head. I didn't want to think about anything work-related to avoid getting nervous. I was happy, but meeting new people was not an exciting thing for me. I had the worst social skills. I pulled my car at the parking lot and went straight to the HR department which I asked around for it's location in the big company. Later, after I was done with the HR, I was directed to a room which seemed like a conference room and there I found other people and from what I heard they were those who got selected for the job. "I'm so eager to know the boss, I heard he is so handsome." a girl next to me said. We are here to meet the boss? Wait, does that mean I will get to know the mastermind behind R Tech Corp? What an honour, that guy or a lady has never been glimpsed anywhere. Not in the news, or the newspapers. I had looked everywhere for his picture or name but I got nothing. "Yeah, and he has a fiance. Isn't that sad? I was hoping to get this job and seduce him and maybe become the madam of the company."Another girl said and I made a disgusted expression. How did she get the job? Her thinking capacity is not up to this company's standards. "What's wrong with you lady?" one raised a question and when there was no response, I looked at them only to find them looking at me. I raised my eyebrows at them."Are you talking to me?" "Yes, you. Are you deaf?" Okay, what did I do?" If I can hear you perfectly then I am not deaf. What do you need?"I asked my eyebrows still raised. I could sense where these girls were headed and I was not letting them reach there. I couldn't stand mean girl energy, people used to be mean to me every time in the past when I didn't know how to defend myself. Even though my self-esteem was not the best till now, at least I had built something over the years and that is self-defence, physically and mentally. "Are you disgusted by us? Why did you make that face? You are just a pretty face, what gives you the right to act better than us." I was flattered but I didn't show it. They thought I was pretty? "You should mind your own business, what I do or don't do should not concern you," I said but one of them stood up anger written all over her face. She stood in front of me and then she swung her right arm ready to hit me but I caught her hand midair while I too stood. "What do you want from me?"I asked calmly releasing her hand but still on guard in case she wanted to hit me again. She was surprised but only for a second. I'm sure she expected me to match her energy. There was no way I was going to waste my energy on such a person. She was not worth it. "Who do you think you are?" she asked furiously. I wanted to laugh. I could see it in her eyes, she was scared and she was just acting furious to make friends or whoever the other two girls were to her to see she had the guts. Such a proud fool, she should have just sat down instead of embarrassing herself. "What's going on there?"A cold deep voice said and I blinked directing my eyes to where that voice came from. My eyes met those green ones. I maintained contact for a few seconds before I looked away. What was Roy doing here? Was he one of us, the newbies? I breathed and with one look at the girl who was still standing in front of me, I sat down. I hated mean people, like this girl and her two girls. Mean people always made me feel unworthy and I hated myself for years because I believed them. The girl went back to her seat and I got to look at where Roy was but realised he was looking in my direction so I looked away immediately and my eyes from that moment looked anywhere but where he was or let's say where his voice was because he started speaking. "Welcome to R tech corp, I believe all of you were chosen because you were competent enough to fit here. As you already know, R tech corp is the best so you need to do your best if you want to stay here. Don't assume that you got the job so it's done, the moment you slow down and give poor results you are going to be fired and your position filled by other more qualified individuals out there looking for jobs. That's all, I'm the CEO of R Tech Corp." he said with finality. People started murmuring but I was beyond shocked. There was no way, he's the CEO. What does that even mean? My brain was not working at all. So many thoughts ran in it all at once, I guess I was blowing up soon.
