CHAPTER 9: Things That Start to Shift The next morning arrived quietly. Not the kind of quiet that felt peaceful. The kind that felt like something was waiting. Hardin Smith noticed it the moment he stepped into the classroom. Anna Fred was already seated. Rose was beside her, talking softly while Anna listened with a small smile. That was becoming normal now. Too normal. “You are early again,” Alexander said as he dropped into his seat. “I did not change my time,” Hardin replied. Alexander smirked. “You did not have to. Something else changed it for you.” Hardin ignored him and sat down. But his eyes still moved. Briefly. Toward Anna. Then away. Rose noticed him almost immediately. She leaned toward Anna and whispered, “He is doing it again.” Anna blinked slightly. “Doing what?” “Looking,” Rose said simply. Anna paused for a moment. Then returned to her notebook. But her grip on the pen changed slightly. The teacher entered and began the lesson. But today, something felt off. The classroom was still loud. Still normal. But attention kept drifting. To certain corners. To certain people. At some point during the lesson, the teacher announced, “You will continue your group discussions today. Prepare your final draft.” A few students groaned. Rose immediately turned to Anna. “We should help each other after school too.” Anna hesitated. “Again?” Rose nodded. “Yes. We are not done.” Anna gave a small sigh. “Okay.” Across the room, Lizzy Lincoln was watching again. Minah leaned closer. “She is always with Rose now.” Lizzy did not answer immediately. Her eyes stayed on Hardin. Then shifted to Anna. “She is getting too comfortable,” Lizzy said quietly. Minah frowned. “With Rose or with him?” Lizzy did not respond. But her expression changed slightly. Emily sat nearby, silent as always. But her eyes followed Hardin. Not Lizzy. Not Rose. Only Hardin. And when Anna laughed softly at something Rose said, Emily quickly looked down. Like she had seen something she should not have. Later in the day, group work began again. Rose and Alexander were arguing about something small again. Anna sat beside Hardin this time. Closer than before. Not intentional. Just natural. “You understood the last part?” Anna asked softly. Hardin nodded. “Yes.” She looked at him. “Can you explain it again?” He paused. Then started speaking. Not too much. Not too little. Just enough for her to understand. And she listened properly. Like she always did. At some point, Anna said quietly, “You explain things in a strange way.” Hardin looked at her. “…Is that bad?” Anna shook her head slightly. “No. It makes it easier to understand.” A short pause. Then she added, “You do not waste words.” Hardin looked away slightly. “That is normal.” “It is not,” she said softly. That made him quiet for a moment longer than usual. Across the room, Alexander noticed. He leaned back slightly. “He is talking more.” Rose smiled. “That is a good thing.” Alexander glanced at her. “Or a dangerous one.” Rose tilted her head. “Why dangerous?” Alexander did not answer immediately. He just looked at Hardin. When class ended, students began leaving again. But Anna stayed for a moment longer. So did Hardin. Neither spoke immediately. “You are going with Rose again?” Hardin asked suddenly. Anna blinked slightly. “Yes.” A pause. Then she added, “Do you not like it?” Hardin hesitated. “I did not say that.” Anna nodded. “Okay.” She stood up slowly. Then looked at him for a second. “See you tomorrow,” she said. “…Tomorrow,” he replied. She left. And again, Hardin stayed seated longer than necessary. Alexander walked over. “You are thinking too much again,” he said. Hardin stood up. “I am not thinking.” Alexander smirked. “That is worse.” Outside the window, Anna walked with Rose again. Laughing softly. Talking more than before. And for a brief moment, Hardin watched without turning away immediately. Then he finally did. But something had already started changing. Slowly. Quietly. And neither of them fully noticed it yet.
