The Siren’s Cry

455 Words
The colossal, armored tentacle slammed onto the wood deck of The Nightstalker with a bone-shattering crack, ripping through the thick hemp netting and sending splintered oak flying into the air. The ship lurked violently to the side, throwing several crew members into the freezing sea foaming below. Black waves boiled over the gunwales as the light-devouring dark water of the trench rose to swallow them whole. "Bring the dragon-fire cannons to bear!" Kaelen bellowed, his amber eyes blazing with an intense, authoritative light. His ink-black arm runes flashed white-hot, radiating waves of kinetic energy that kept him perfectly anchored to the slick, pitching deck. With an fluid, deadly twist, he swung his bone-handled daggers, slicing a deep, glowing violet gash across the massive appendage blocking the helm. The creature unleashed a deep, sub-audible roar that vibrated through the floorboards, threatening to shatter the eardrums of every mortal man on deck. "Elora! The melody!" Kaelen shouted, parrying a swinging mass of severed rigging as he looked back at her over his leather-clad shoulder. "We can't survive a war of physical attrition with a beast this size! You have to disrupt its neural array now!" Elora stepped up onto the elevated platform of the quarterdeck, the bitter sea wind ripping through her dark hair. Beneath her thin tunic, the pulsing violet veins along her legs throbbed in response to the leviathan’s ancient, dark magic. The blood enchantment was screaming under the strain of the land’s dry touch, but the ocean’s raw power was answering her call. She knew that unleashing her full vocal power now would drain her magical reservoir completely, but there was no turning back. She threw her head back, her eyes flaring a brilliant, luminescent amethyst that cut through the pouring rain and sea spray. Opening her mouth, Elora unleashed a concussive, high-frequency siren chord. The sonic wave cut through the howling gale like a physical spear, rippling the surface of the rain and striking the towering beast dead-center. The creature shuddered instantly, its armored plating vibrating violently as her royal vocal frequency shattered the dark-magic field keeping it tethered to the surface. "Keep singing, little fish!" Kaelen roared, his voice filled with a desperate, wild pride as he leaped directly onto the thrashing monster, using his glowing daggers to carve a path toward its primary core. But the magical recoil was already tearing through Elora's body. The air in her lungs felt like liquid fire, and she could feel her fragile human legs beginning to numb, the blood curse flickering on the verge of total collapse. She held the chord, pushing her vocal resonance to its absolute limit, determined to buy the dark-elf prince the seconds he needed to strike the final blow.
