The crowded streets on the banks of Hooghly river were all set for the great festival of the year, festooned pandals ostentatiously built to emulate the magnificent temples and shrines were harbouring the idols of Devi. Goddess shakthi the feminine nature of the universe and Shiva the masculine nature of universe entangles to form the visible world. Hundreds of idols were made and on the ninth day the puja was at its peak the day before the final immersion ceremony called ‘Maha bisarjan’. The day on which umpteen ceremoniously clad devi idols float in the Hooghly with garlands and vermillion in the water.
The ninth day night the streets were filled with pious crowd, chanting of mantras synchronised with the high pitched ringing of bronze bells and fumes from burning camphors and incenses
