The treaty of Gandamak was signed by the British and Emir of Afghanisthan Muhammed Yaqub Khan on 26 May 1879 and Sir Louis Cavagnari became the British resident in Kabul to oversee all the forgein affairs in Afghanisthan. The peace didn’t last, four months later Mohammed Ayub Khan abdicated his brother the Emir and ceased power, he massacered the British resident and his envoy, invoking the second Anglo-Afghan war.
