Chapter 9: The Night the Distance Finally Snapped

326 Words
📖 Chapter 9: What Silence Hides Renesmee stood in the doorway, her heart breaking for him even as her mind screamed a warning — don’t get too close, don’t let him lean on you, you are not his refuge. But seeing him so worn down, so conflicted, she couldn’t simply walk away. “Long distances test every part of a relationship,” she said softly, stepping just far enough into the room to be there but not enough to intrude. “Especially one that’s lasted as long as yours. You’ve built a life apart — two different schedules, two different worlds. It’s not that you’re lying to each other. It’s that you’re no longer living the same truth.” Arvee let out a shaky breath, running a hand through his hair. “I keep telling myself it’s just the distance. That when we close the gap, everything will go back to how it was. But what if I’m lying to myself? What if we’ve already grown apart and neither of us has had the courage to say it?” He looked at her then — really looked at her — and in his eyes, she saw something that terrified her: relief. Not love, not yet, but the simple, profound relief of being understood without judgment. Of someone listening without taking sides. “I’m sorry,” he said, straightening up and pulling back, that polite professional wall sliding back into place. “I shouldn’t burden you with this. It’s not fair to you. And it’s not fair to her.” “You’re not a burden,” Renesmee told him gently. “But you’re right — whatever happens, it needs to be between the two of you. Without anyone else in the middle.” He nodded, turning away to pour himself a glass of water, but not before she caught the flash of something deeper — a quiet longing that had nothing to do with miles between states.
