Marian arrived at the gym earlier than usual the next morning, but she was surprised to find Emerald already there.
Emerald was sitting on the first row of the bleachers with her backpack beside her. When she noticed Marian walking in, she looked at the clock on the wall.
"You're early."
"So are you."
"I wanted to know what Coach Daniels was going to say."
Marian placed her bag beside the bench. "Same."
They both looked toward the court.
The gym was still mostly empty, and without the usual noise of practice, Marian found herself thinking about the conversation they had the afternoon before.
She had admitted that she felt something.
Not everything.
But enough.
Now she wasn't sure how they were supposed to act around each other.
Emerald seemed to be thinking the same thing.
"So..." she began.
Marian looked at her.
"So?"
"Are we going to pretend yesterday didn't happen?"
Marian considered the question.
"No."
Emerald nodded slowly. "Good."
Before either of them could say more, the gym doors opened.
Tessa walked in, carrying her bag over one shoulder.
"Why are you two here this early?"
"Coach called a meeting," Marian said.
"I know that. I just didn't expect anyone to actually come early."
Tessa dropped her bag beside Marian's.
"Do you know what it's about?"
"No," Emerald answered.
Tessa looked between them.
"Well, whatever it is, it must be serious."
More players arrived over the next few minutes until the gym was almost full. Everyone seemed curious about the reason for the meeting, but Coach Daniels kept them waiting.
When she finally walked in, the conversations immediately stopped.
Coach Daniels placed a folder on the bench before facing the team.
"I know you're all wondering why I called you here."
Tessa leaned slightly toward Marian.
"Definitely."
Marian gave her a quick look before turning back to Coach Daniels.
"Our next game is important," Coach Daniels continued. "But before we talk about that, there's something I need you to understand."
She picked up the folder.
"The school has confirmed that the regional tournament schedule has been released."
A few players exchanged excited looks.
Marian straightened.
The regional tournament was the next major step toward the championship. Every game mattered now.
Coach Daniels looked around the gym.
"We have three weeks."
The excitement in the room disappeared almost immediately.
"Three weeks?" Tessa repeated.
Coach Daniels nodded.
"And our first tournament game is against Eastbrook."
Marian knew the name.
Eastbrook had one of the strongest girls' basketball teams in the district.
Emerald looked at her.
"You know them?"
"Yes," Marian said. "They're good."
"How good?"
Marian paused.
"Good enough that we can't afford to make the mistakes we've been making."
Coach Daniels heard her.
"Exactly."
She opened the folder and began handing out the schedule.
"This tournament will be different from the regular season. There won't be much room to recover from a bad game. One mistake can send you home."
Marian looked down at the schedule in her hands.
Three weeks.
For months, she had imagined leading Westbridge back to the championship.
Now it suddenly felt much closer.
Coach Daniels continued.
"And because of that, I'm making a few changes to how we train."
The team grew quiet again.
"We'll be practicing four days a week instead of three. There will also be additional morning sessions for the starters."
Marian glanced at Emerald.
Emerald was already looking at her.
Neither of them said anything.
Coach Daniels closed the folder.
"I also want everyone to understand something. From this point forward, nobody is guaranteed a starting position."
Marian's stomach tightened.
She knew exactly what that meant.
Coach Daniels looked directly at her and then at Emerald.
"Every position will be based on performance."
Marian sat a little straighter.
Emerald didn't look away.
Coach Daniels gave them both a firm nod.
"That includes point guard."
A silence settled over the gym.
Marian felt the familiar tension return, but this time it was different.
She wasn't angry at Emerald.
She wasn't even angry at Coach Daniels.
She simply understood what was at stake.
For the first time since Emerald had arrived at Westbridge, Marian wasn't fighting just to get her position back.
She was fighting for the team.
And she had a feeling Emerald understood that too.
Coach Daniels picked up her whistle.
"Practice starts in ten minutes."
Tessa stood up with a sigh.
"Well, there goes my peaceful morning."
Emerald laughed.
Marian smiled too.
Then she looked once more at the tournament schedule.
Three weeks.
And this time, there would be no room for either of them to hold back.
