The New Challenge

The team stayed in the gym after the meeting, but the mood had changed. The tournament schedule had made everything feel more serious. Even Tessa, who usually found something to joke about, was quieter as the players gathered their things for practice. Marian stood near the court, studying the schedule Coach Daniels had handed them. Eastbrook. Three weeks. She knew they couldn't afford another game like the one against Northside. "Thinking about the tournament already?" Marian looked up to find Emerald beside her. "I'm thinking about how much work we have to do." "That's more like you." "What does that mean?" "You always look for the problem before anyone else does." Marian folded the schedule and slipped it into her bag. "Someone has to." Emerald smiled. "Then I guess I'll let you worry for both of us." "Don't count on it." Before Emerald could answer, Coach Daniels blew her whistle. "Everyone on the court." The players hurried into position. Coach Daniels divided them into two groups and explained the first drill. It was designed to test how quickly they could move the ball under pressure, but there was another purpose behind it. "Marian and Emerald," Coach Daniels called. "You're running the first unit." Marian looked at Emerald. Again. They moved into position. The drill began, and Eastbrook's name seemed to disappear from Marian's mind as she concentrated on the play in front of her. Emerald received the ball near the top of the key. Marian cut toward the basket. For a second, Emerald could have taken the shot herself. Instead, she passed. Marian caught it in stride and scored. "Good," Coach Daniels called. "Again." The next play was faster. This time Marian had the ball, but two defenders closed in on her. She could have forced the pass to Emerald, but she noticed Tessa moving into open space and sent the ball to her instead. Tessa scored. "That's better," Coach Daniels said. "Move the ball. Don't force anything." The drill continued. Marian began noticing something she hadn't expected. Playing alongside Emerald no longer felt like a competition every second. They were beginning to understand each other's movements. When Marian moved, Emerald seemed to know where she was going. When Emerald changed direction, Marian was already adjusting. It made them difficult to defend. After several minutes, Coach Daniels stopped the drill. "That's the kind of basketball I want from you." Marian wiped her forehead with the back of her hand. Tessa walked over. "You two are getting scary." Emerald laughed. "Scary?" "Yes. You barely even talk anymore. You just know where the other person is going." Marian glanced at Emerald. "She's exaggerating." "I'm not," Tessa said. "It's actually annoying." Everyone laughed. Even Coach Daniels smiled before calling them back into position. Practice continued for another hour. By the end, Marian was exhausted, but she felt better than she had after most practices recently. As the team began leaving, Emerald stayed behind to collect the basketballs. Marian noticed and helped her. "You don't have to do that," Emerald said. "I know." They placed the last ball in the storage rack. Emerald leaned against it. "Today felt different." Marian nodded. "It did." "Better?" "Definitely." Emerald smiled. "Good." Marian picked up her bag. Then she remembered something. "Emerald." "Yeah?" "About yesterday..." Emerald waited. Marian hesitated. "I don't know what we're supposed to do about... whatever this is." Emerald's expression softened. "Neither do I." "You're not worried?" "I am." Marian looked surprised. Emerald continued, "But I don't think we have to figure everything out right now." Marian nodded slowly. That answer made things easier. For once, there was no pressure to name what was happening between them. They could simply let it develop. At least for now. As they walked out of the gym together, neither noticed Coach Daniels watching them from across the court. She had noticed the change between them too. And she wasn't sure whether it would become Westbridge's biggest strength—or its biggest distraction.
