No Room For Mistakes

The second quarter began with Northside still holding the lead. Marian glanced at the scoreboard before taking her position. The difference wasn't impossible to overcome, but every missed opportunity was making the gap harder to close. Emerald came up beside her. “We're getting there.” Marian nodded. “We need to stop giving them easy points.” “Agreed.” The whistle blew. Northside had possession again. Their point guard brought the ball up the court, and Marian immediately picked her up. This time, she didn't rush to steal. She stayed in front of her, waiting for the right moment. The Northside player tried to create space. Marian stayed with her. She passed to a teammate. Marian turned and followed the ball. Westbridge's defense shifted together, cutting off the passing lanes. Northside was forced to reset. Then Emerald stepped into the passing lane. She intercepted the ball. “Go!” Marian was already moving. Emerald pushed the ball forward and passed it across the court. Marian caught it near the three-point line and drove toward the basket. A defender stepped in front of her. Marian stopped. For a second, she considered forcing the shot. Then she saw Emerald cutting toward the basket. Marian passed. Emerald caught it and scored. The Westbridge bench erupted. Marian jogged back on defense. “Nice cut,” she said. Emerald smiled. “Nice pass.” They were beginning to do it without thinking. That was what surprised Marian most. A few weeks ago, she had been determined to prove Emerald didn't belong in her position. Now she was starting to trust her instincts on the court. And Emerald was trusting hers. Northside called a timeout. Coach Daniels gathered the team. “Better,” she said. “But don't get comfortable. They're going to adjust.” Marian nodded. She knew Coach was right. Northside had beaten them once already. They wouldn't make the same mistake twice. When the teams returned to the court, Northside changed their defense. Instead of allowing Marian and Emerald space to move the ball, they began pressuring them both. Marian received the ball and immediately had a defender on her. She looked for Emerald. Nothing. The defense had covered her. Marian dribbled toward the sideline. She was running out of space. Then Emerald appeared. Marian passed. Emerald caught the ball and took two steps before another defender closed in. She passed back. Marian caught it. For a moment, there was nowhere to go. “Marian!” Tessa was open near the corner. Marian sent the ball across. Tessa shot. The basket dropped. “Let's go!” someone shouted from the Westbridge bench. Marian smiled as she ran back. They were finding ways through Northside's defense. But Northside wasn't giving up. The next few minutes became a battle. Westbridge scored. Northside answered. Emerald stole the ball. Northside forced a turnover. Marian made a three. Northside responded with one of their own. By halftime, the gap had narrowed considerably. As the players headed toward the bench, Marian glanced at the scoreboard. They were still behind. But not by much. Emerald dropped onto the bench beside her. “You're smiling.” Marian looked at her. “Am I?” “Yeah.” “Maybe because we're not losing by much anymore.” Emerald laughed. “That's your reason?” “Obviously.” Coach Daniels walked over before Emerald could answer. “You're both playing well,” she said. “But the second half is going to be harder.” Marian nodded. Coach looked at her for a moment. “Don't try to win the game by yourself.” Marian glanced at Emerald. “I won't.” Coach moved on. Emerald nudged her shoulder lightly. “You heard her.” Marian smiled. “I heard her.” The referee called the teams back onto the court. Marian stood. The score was close. Northside was still dangerous. But Westbridge had something they hadn't had last season. Marian looked at Emerald. “You ready?” Emerald picked up the ball. “Always.” They walked back onto the court together. This time, Marian wasn't thinking about the loss from last year. She was thinking about what they could do before the final whistle. And they still had a whole half to play.
