The following afternoon, Marian arrived at practice with a different kind of energy.
The regional tournament was getting closer, and Coach Daniels had made it clear that the team couldn't afford to become comfortable. Their recent practices had gone well, but everyone knew the real test would come when the tournament started.
Marian tied her shoes and looked across the court at Emerald.
Emerald caught her staring.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"You've been saying that a lot lately."
Marian smiled. "Maybe you're just noticing more."
Emerald raised an eyebrow but didn't push it. "Come on. Coach is waiting."
They joined the rest of the team as Coach Daniels gathered everyone around.
"I want to change things up today," she said. "We've been working on your strengths, but the tournament won't always give you the kind of game you expect. So today, we're going to work on what happens when things go wrong."
The team settled into position.
The first drill was difficult from the beginning. Coach Daniels put pressure on the offense, forcing them to make quick decisions while defenders crowded the passing lanes.
Marian struggled at first.
She missed a pass, lost the ball on the next possession, and immediately tried to make up for it by forcing a difficult shot.
The ball hit the rim.
"Reset," Coach Daniels called.
Marian took a breath.
Emerald moved closer.
"Don't rush."
"I know."
"Then stop trying to fix everything in one play."
Marian looked at her and almost laughed.
"You sound like Coach."
"Maybe Coach is rubbing off on me."
"That's terrifying."
Emerald smiled before moving back into position.
The next possession went differently.
Marian slowed down, waited for the defense to shift, then passed to Emerald. Emerald didn't shoot. Instead, she moved the ball to Tessa, who was open near the basket.
Tessa scored.
"Better," Coach Daniels said.
The drill continued, and gradually the team found its rhythm.
Later, Coach Daniels introduced a new exercise. She divided the players into groups and gave each group a different situation to solve. Marian's group had thirty seconds to score while the defense was allowed to pressure them from the moment the ball came in.
They failed the first two attempts.
On the third, Marian looked at Emerald.
No words were necessary.
Marian moved left. Emerald moved right. The defense followed Marian, leaving Emerald enough space to receive the pass.
But instead of taking the shot, Emerald passed to Tessa.
Tessa scored just before the whistle.
The team cheered.
Coach Daniels nodded. "That's what I'm talking about. You don't need one person to save you. You need everyone making the right decision."
Marian looked around at her teammates.
For the first time, the pressure of the tournament didn't feel like something she had to carry alone.
After practice, Marian was packing her bag when Emerald came over.
"You were different today."
Marian looked up. "Different how?"
"Calmer."
"Is that a compliment?"
"Definitely."
Marian zipped her bag. "I'm learning."
Emerald smiled. "I can see that."
They walked toward the doors together, but before they reached them, Coach Daniels called Marian back.
"Marian, a minute."
Emerald stopped.
"I'll wait outside."
Marian nodded and watched her leave.
Coach Daniels waited until the gym was almost empty before speaking.
"I've been watching you closely these past few weeks."
Marian straightened. "Did I do something wrong?"
"No. That's the point."
Coach Daniels placed the clipboard on the bench.
"You're playing differently. You're trusting your teammates more, and that's good. But there's something else I want you to understand before the tournament."
Marian waited.
"Being captain doesn't mean you have to be the person everyone depends on for every answer. Sometimes, your job is to recognize what your team needs and let them provide it."
Marian nodded slowly.
"I understand."
"I hope so. Because once the tournament starts, the pressure will be different."
Marian thought about that as she walked outside.
Emerald was waiting near the entrance, exactly where she'd promised.
"Everything okay?" Emerald asked.
"Yeah."
"What did Coach want?"
Marian looked back at the gym before answering.
"She just reminded me that the tournament is going to be harder than anything we've faced so far."
Emerald nodded.
"Then we'll be ready."
Marian smiled.
There was something comforting about hearing Emerald say we.
But as they started walking, Marian couldn't shake the feeling that Coach Daniels had been preparing her for something more than just another basketball tournament.
She just didn't know what it was yet.
