The Next Step

660 Words
The next afternoon, Marian found herself checking the time more often than she wanted to admit. Practice wasn't starting for another twenty minutes, but she was already in the gym, sitting on the edge of the bleachers with her basketball beside her. She had tried to focus on homework during lunch, but every time her mind wandered, she ended up thinking about yesterday. Emerald reaching for her hand. That brief moment when their fingers had met. And the fact that Marian hadn't pulled away. She was still trying to decide what that meant when the gym doors opened. Emerald walked in with her bag over one shoulder. She spotted Marian almost immediately and smiled. "You're early again." Marian smiled back. "You are too." "Maybe we're both getting predictable." "I don't think that's a bad thing." Emerald stopped for a second, as if she hadn't expected that answer. Then she walked over and dropped her bag beside Marian. "I thought about yesterday," she said. Marian looked at her. "So did I." "And?" Marian glanced down at their hands, remembering how natural it had felt despite all the nerves. "I think I'm okay with it." "With what?" "Whatever we're doing." Emerald's smile softened. "Good. Because I don't really want to pretend it didn't happen." "Neither do I." Before either of them could say more, Coach Daniels' voice carried across the gym. "Everyone on the court. We're starting." Marian stood, picking up her basketball. Emerald followed beside her, and for once, neither of them seemed uncomfortable about being close. Practice began with shooting drills, followed by defensive work. The tournament was getting closer, and Coach Daniels had stopped allowing the team to coast through anything. Every missed rotation was corrected. Every careless pass meant another repetition. During the scrimmage, Marian took control of the offense without trying to control everything else. She brought the ball up, saw Emerald cutting toward the basket, and passed. Emerald caught it cleanly and scored. "Nice pass," Tessa called from the other side of the court. Marian grinned. "Nice finish." Emerald jogged past her. "You make me look good." "You do that yourself." Emerald laughed, and Marian had to force herself to look back at the game. A few possessions later, Emerald returned the favor. Marian drove toward the basket, but instead of forcing the shot, Emerald found her in space. Marian caught the pass and scored. "That's what I want to see!" Coach Daniels called. "Keep moving the ball." The scrimmage continued, and Marian noticed something that would have surprised her a few weeks earlier. She wasn't thinking about getting her old position back. She wasn't trying to prove she was better than Emerald. She was simply playing. And Emerald was right there with her. By the end of practice, Marian was tired but satisfied. The team had made mistakes, but they were communicating better than they had before, and the offense felt less dependent on one person making everything happen. As everyone began packing up, Emerald stayed near Marian. "You played well today," she said. "So did you." "I wasn't talking about basketball." Marian looked at her, amused. "Then what were you talking about?" "The way you didn't overthink everything." Marian laughed quietly. "I'm still working on that." "I know." They walked out of the gym together. For a moment, neither said anything. Then Emerald glanced toward the school entrance. "Do you have somewhere to be?" "Not really." "Want to walk with me for a while?" Marian hesitated only because she knew that a simple walk with Emerald suddenly felt like something much bigger. "Yeah," she said. "I'd like that." They stepped outside together, leaving the noise of the gym behind. The tournament was getting closer, and Marian knew there was still plenty of work ahead of them. But as she walked beside Emerald, their shoulders occasionally brushing, she found herself looking forward to what came next for reasons that had nothing to do with basketball.
