CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO He wet paper towelling under the tap and wiped his armpits. They stank because he and the kid rarely had safe access to running water and almost never hot water. Even what he was doing now wouldn’t help much. He didn’t have clean clothes to put on. Gone were the suits and chinos. Now he possessed a small bunch of clothes, stolen or passed on from others, and they could only risk using the laundromat about once a month, so a scuff with soap and cold water had to do in between. But possessions, hygiene, and appearance meant nothing in the scheme of things.
