Chapter 2

1803 Words
11:53 East Express Train At the far corner of the wagon, a petite woman with sleek shiny black hair tied into a perfect French braid sat quietly, her long black coat draped around her small frame. She seemed to be absorbed in a book, but in reality, her sharp eyes flitted occasionally to the other side of the compartment, carefully observing the three passengers who had been talking. The light from the window reflected off the thick pares, making it seem like she was deep in reading, but her thoughts were far from the novel in her hands. She scowled inwardly, her mind heavy with jealousy and curiosity. Why are they so important to P? She mused, her eyes settling first on Terry. He sat there, leaning back with that carefree, confident air. His athletic build and boyish charm stood out even in a simple T-shirt and jeans, his dark brown hair styled in that effortless idol look that probably made girls weak at the knees. What’s so special about him? He doesn’t even seem like he knows what he is doing half the time, she thought. Then there was Larissa, who annoyed her the most. That woman, with her short red hair perfectly styled like something out of a vintage magazine, her long legs elegantly crossed, looked like she belonged on a runway rather than in a train compartment. Larissa’s light green eyes scanned the room like she owned it, her subtle makeup highlighting her perfect features. Of course, she has to look like she’s stepped out of a fashion show, she thought bitterly. Why does she get all the attention? Lastly, her gaze shifted to Olaf. And him? He barely even speaks. His slim figure sat rigidly, his well-cut suit neat and proper as ever. His pale face with the distinctive mole under his right eye only emphasized how nervous and out of place he looked. What does P see in any of them? She wondered. Her mind raced with frustration. I’m a trained spy, for crying out loud. And here I am, babysitting these three regular people, she thought, suppressing the urge to roll her eyes. All because I’m the youngest spy at Cobra Labs, forced to play the polite little secretary. It’s ridiculous. I should be leading missions, not playing nice with everyone. She clenched her jaw, a flicker of determination flashing in her dark eyes. I’ll prove my worth, though. I’ll show them I’m more than capable. She glanced over at Larissa again, unable to help herself. There was something about Larissa’s graceful posture that both irritated and fascinated her. She found herself unconsciously mimicking Larissa’s leg crossing, but quickly snapped out of it, readjusting her position and straightening her back with a slight huff. Her eyes shifted to the window as the train began to slow down, the scenery outside changing. The platform was coming into view, a weathered sign slowly creeping past her line of vision: Lonebay JC 300 mt. She checked the time briefly, then stood up, her high-heeled boots making a soft, rhythmic click against the floor. She straightened her black coat, smoothing down the front, and without a second glance at the others, walked out of the compartment. The woman made her way nine cars forward, walking with quick, purposeful steps. She passed through the connecting doors, her boots tapping steadily as the train slowed further. She finally stopped at the very front of the train, waiting for it to come to a complete halt. The station was crowded with people milling about, a sea of bodies moving in different directions. The vintage design of the station, with its old-fashioned clock hanging from the ceiling and dimly lit lamps casting a warm yellow glow, gave the place an air of nostalgia. Despite the bustling crowd, she moved gracefully through them, barely brushing shoulders with anyone. Her sharp eyes scanned the area, and she quickly spotted her two colleagues waiting by the ticket booth. The first was a well-built young man in his early twenties, casually leaning against the booth, his coat hanging loosely on his shoulders, giving him an air of effortless confidence. Beside him stood his senior, a tall, serious man in his late forties, his face set in a stern expression as he scanned the crowd, his posture rigid and commanding. Both wore black coats like hers, blending in with the crowd yet unmistakable to her trained eye. She approached them, her heels clicking against the vintage stone floor, her mind focused on the task ahead. “Ready? Here they come,” the woman said with authority, her tone sharp, underlined with a slight edge of anger. Her eyes were fixed on the train as waves of people were coming down. The two men flanking her, the younger one with a relaxed stance and the older man with a more disciplined posture, both nodded silently. Without a word, they walked a few paces forward, stopping just shy of the train’s front doors. Their hands were crossed neatly in front of them, their expressions stoic and serious. Meanwhile, back in the train’s middle wagon, the trio remained seated as the carriage began its gradual stop. Around them, passengers were getting up, collecting bags, and preparing to disembark. The noise of the station started to filter through the open windows as the brakes screeched softly. The three of them exchanged glances, feeling the quiet anticipation that hung in the air. Olaf, ever punctual and composed, glanced at his watch, his pale hand gracefully adjusting the sleeve of his suit. He broke the silence, saying out loud, “It is twelve o’clock. What now?” His voice, though calm, carried the tension of someone who felt there was more to come but didn’t know how to start. Terry shifted in his seat, leaning forward, lowering his voice to ensure they wouldn’t be overheard. “P should be on the train or getting on, right?” He looked between them for confirmation. Olaf gave a brief nod, his fingers absent-mindedly touching the bridge of his nose as if adjusting invisible glasses. It was a habit he hadn’t shaken since his eye surgery. Larissa, sitting opposite them, scoffed quietly, brushing her short red hair behind her ear. She met their eyes with a bemused look. “Didn’t you see the small woman who left earlier?” she asked, clearly surprised that neither of them had noticed. Terry leaned even closer, a slight frown creasing his brow. “What about her? She left before the train even stopped,” he said, glancing at Olaf for confirmation. Olaf, always thinking strategically, asked with a furrowed brow, “Do you think she knows something, Miss Thomas? Could she be P?” Larissa huffed, straightening in her seat and smoothing out her coat. “That, I can’t assure you, but she was indeed suspicious. She either has got a card like all of us or is part of the plot working for P, but what I’m certain of is that she has something to do with this. She kept looking at us the whole time. Seriously, guys, didn’t you notice?” Both men exchanged a quick look before shrugging slightly, as if dismissing her observation as unimportant. With a cheeky grin, Terry turned back to Larissa. “Everyone was looking at you during the ride,” he said, the corners of his mouth twitching with amusement. Larissa smiled, a sly glint in her eyes, about to retort when all three of their phones buzzed at the same time. The sudden vibration cut through the atmosphere, catching their full attention. They glanced down in unison, their screens lighting up with the message they had been waiting for: Get off here. Someone is waiting for you. — P. Puzzled but intrigued, excitement buzzed through them. They shared a look, the tension in the air palpable as they each smiled in their own way — an eager grin from Terry, a calculating nod from Olaf, and a smirk from Larissa. They stood up as one, moving quickly but carefully, trying not to draw attention as they made their way to the door, blending into the flow of passengers exiting the train. Outside, their next step was waiting for them. As the trio approached the train doors, they saw her — the petite woman from before — standing with two men flanking her, all three stationed just in front of the exit. Terry leaned in close to Larissa and whispered, “You were right, she’s part of this.” Larissa shot him a glance, her expression a mix of satisfaction and concern. Olaf, always calculating, remarked, “If this wasn’t something P planned, I’d be very worried about the risks we’re already facing just by being here.” “Don’t worry, Olaf, let me talk to them—” Larissa began, but was quickly cut off by Terry who, with a grin, moved ahead of both of them. “Sorry, love, I’ll talk first,” Terry quipped, stepping off the train with his usual air of cockiness. Standing before the trio of strangers, Terry sized them up, flashing his most charming smile. “Well, well, this must be the welcoming committee. And here I thought I’d have to introduce myself first.” Sarah didn’t even blink, her face cold and indifferent. “I’m Sarah Lee. These are Logan and Marcus,” she said, nodding to the two men. “We’re elite agents of Cobra Labs, an international strategic facility. P owns the operation. We’re here to escort you to our headquarters, where the higher-ups are waiting.” Terry’s grin faltered slightly. “Elite agents, huh? I guess I should be flattered.” She ignored his attempt at charm, her tone unchanging. “This way.” Without waiting for a response, she turned, motioning for Logan and Marcus to follow as they headed toward the exit. Olaf, still standing near the train, cleared his throat and called after them, “Excuse me, when are we going to see P? Or at least get some clarity on what this experience is supposed to be?” Sarah paused but didn’t turn around. “All your answers are waiting at Cobra Labs,” she said, her voice flat. Without further explanation, she resumed walking. The trio exchanged glances — a mixture of curiosity and apprehension in their eyes. One by one, they stepped off the train. Terry, still intrigued by Sarah’s cold demeanor, moved first, his steps deliberate. Larissa followed closely behind; eyes sharp as she studied every detail around her. Olaf, always cautious, brought up the rear, his mind already spinning with potential risks and strategies. Together, they walked toward the unknown, puzzled and expectant of what awaited them at Cobra Labs.
