As soon as I arrived home, Meg rushed us out the door and into Essie"s car. As we entered the town"s center, my heart fell. The wooden shops had been replaced by brick buildings with large storefront windows. Stores I had considered part of my youth appeared to be gone. The sign to Thompson"s Used Book and Sauerkraut store, now, flashed with an Up the Hill Bakery sign. New merchants, selling their expensive products, advertised their exclusive wares.
