I didn't give the woman much time to think. I yanked the steering wheel, broke through the guardrail, and charged into the forest. Thankfully, the car was sturdy enough.
We crashed violently into a small ravine, the intense jolts almost throwing us both out of the car, but it was still drivable.
"Hold on tight," I said, pinning the woman down with one hand while gripping the seat with the other. No matter how much the car jolted, I wasn't about to let either of us get thrown out.
"Argh!" The woman let out a scream as we hit something hard, and the car came to a sudden stop.
I glanced at the rearview mirror and saw three men armed with rifles quickly approaching. 'D*mn it! They really mean to kill us!' I cursed inwardly.
"No!" The woman snapped out of her daze and slapped me across the face. "What are you trying to do? Are you trying to take advantage of me?"
It was then that I realized my hand was still pressed firmly against her chest. Embarrassed, I quickly pulled my hand back and shouted, "Drive! They're catching up!"
Bang! Bang! Bang! A barrage of gunfire rang out, riddling the car with holes.
"F*ck, they just won't quit!" The woman expertly started the car and sped off.
"There's no road ahead! What now?" she yelled in panic.
That was exactly what I wanted. Once we were deep in the forest, they'd lose their advantage.
"Keep going! Drive into the forest, now!" I exclaimed.
"Are you trying to get us killed?" she shouted, slamming on the brakes and opening the door. "Run! They haven't caught up yet! Just run!"
I was speechless. I had no choice but to follow her lead. Bullets continued to rain down from behind us as we got out of the car.
"Hurry! Hide in there!" I waved her over and led her to a small depression in the ground. Pulling her down, I said, "Stay here. No matter what, don't come out unless I call for you. Got it?"
"You're just going to leave me here and run off, aren't you?" she glared at me, clearly unhappy.
"Stay hidden. I'll deal with them and come back for you," I said before running toward a more open area. It was the only way to divert their attention. She'd only slow me down if she followed.
Hiding behind a large tree, I watched as the three gunmen entered the forest. Taking a deep breath, I picked up a sturdy tree branch. The only way was to take them down one by one. If I could take out even one of them and grab their gun, I'd have a chance to fight back. For now, this branch was my best weapon.
After searching for a while without success, the three eventually split up to cover more ground.
'Perfect. That's exactly what I was hoping for,' I thought.
A tall, burly gunman headed in my direction. Using the tree as cover, I stayed completely still, not giving away my position.
As his footsteps grew closer, a patch of grass was kicked aside. The gunman raised his rifle, ready to shoot, but in the next second, he was doubled over in pain. Taking advantage of his distraction, I lunged forward and struck his legs with the branch.
"Argh!" He let out a pained scream, the excruciating pain leaving him unable to fight back. As he instinctively reached to cover his injury, I snatched his rifle and aimed it at his chest.
"No..." He trembled.
"Bye." With a smirk, I pulled the trigger, riddling the gunman with bullets.
"There!" The other two gunmen noticed the commotion and opened fire wildly, not caring if they hit their own man.
Using the fallen gunman as cover, I waited for them to get close enough, then suddenly raised the rifle and fired back.
One of them dropped instantly, while the other quickly ducked for cover. The gunfire momentarily stopped.
I dashed behind another tree, crouching low and scanning the area ahead.
The last gunman was smart. He didn't fire again and was now hiding so well that I couldn't spot any signs of an ambush.
The K13 was just a small gang in Northvale. I didn't know much about them, but judging by the tactics of these gunmen, they weren't amateurs. How did Rosalind end up crossing paths with them?
From their earlier attack, it was clear they were after Rosalind. They must've assumed she was the one in the car.
The question was, how did they know her whereabouts? And why did Rosalind send someone else to test me? Who else could've known?
The woman who had been testing me clearly thought her plan was flawless, which meant no one else should've known about the switch. To the outside world, Rosalind was supposed to be the one picking me up, which explained the ambush.
In short, there was a leak.
It seemed Mike giving me this ring was his way of telling me there was serious infighting within the Fighters, and it had reached a critical point where it needed immediate correction.
At that moment, a man holding a pistol burst in. Without hesitation, I aimed and shot him in the head.
What followed was a frenzy of gunfire, the shots coming from behind the tree trunk opposite me.
I ducked and rolled to take cover behind another tree as bullets rained down like a storm, splintering wood everywhere. The situation was clear—the enemy had no intention of letting up. If I so much as peeked out, I'd be shot instantly. This gunman wasn't just reckless. He was quite smart.
Leaning against the tree trunk, I couldn't move. My only option was to pray he'd run out of bullets so I could counterattack.
As I expected, the gunfire suddenly stopped, replaced by the distinct sound of a jam. Just as I peeked out to retaliate, I saw the barrel of his gun aimed fiercely at me.
"What?" I quickly ducked back as bullets shattered the tree trunk again, missing my head by mere inches.
It wasn't that the enemy was reloading. He had deliberately baited me out. This guy was cunning.
Mike always said, "When things go south, use your brain." Now, the enemy was doing just that, and it was clear he was determined to kill me.
I swallowed hard, slowly stood up, raised my gun with one hand, and shifted sideways. Wood chips continued to scatter around me as bullets struck the tree.
A diversion tactic flashed through my mind. Without hesitation, I straightened up and used the narrow space to take off my jacket.
'Trying to get me? No way!' I thought.
I grabbed the jacket, balled it up, raised my gun in my right hand, took a deep breath, and decisively threw the jacket to the right. Bullets came flying wildly, shredding the jacket instantly.
But the next second, the gunman realized he'd been tricked. I clearly saw his eyes widen. Just as he turned his gun toward me, my bullet had already pierced through him, ending his life.
The gunfire stopped. I rushed forward with my gun to check. Only after confirming the gunman was dead did I breathe a sigh of relief.
"It's safe now. Come out," I shouted toward the woman in the distance.
But it was clear she was too scared to move. I didn't think much of it, knowing we couldn't stay here long. Tossing the gun aside, I ran to her and shouted, "Come on. We need to leave now."
"It's... It's really you..." The woman cautiously crawled out, poking her head around to survey the area. After confirming it was safe, she gave me a thumbs-up and said, "Miss Martin's bodyguard is truly impressive. Looks like there's no need to test you further."
"What's your relationship with Miss Martin?" I grabbed her arm and asked.
"I'm her cousin. You can call me Shirley," she replied.
"Who else knows about Miss Martin sending you to contact me?" I asked urgently.
"Just the two of us. But the whole company knows Miss Martin planned to pick you up personally." Shirley Martin suddenly seemed to realize something and quickly asked, "Are you saying someone leaked the information to send assassins after her?"
"You're absolutely right. Someone's trying to assassinate her. Call Rosalind immediately and tell her to find a safe place to hide. I'm going to find her right now," I instructed.
