The foundation's main lobby buzzed with the quiet hum of productivity. Damon stood near the reception desk, a cup of coffee in his hand, watching the flow of employees and visitors. The building had grown over the years—new wings, new departments, new faces. What had started as a small initiative had become a global organization, touching lives in ways he had never imagined. It was a strange feeling, seeing the legacy of his work take shape. The battles, the losses, the sacrifices—they had all been worth it. The foundation was proof that something good could come from the darkness. "Damon." Sasha's voice was sharp, cutting through his thoughts. She was walking toward him, her laptop tucked under her arm, her face pale. "We need to talk. Now." "What's wrong?" "I found something. Something I've never seen before." --- They walked to Sasha's office, a small room tucked away in the corner of the building. The walls were lined with screens, each one displaying a different stream of data. Sasha set her laptop on the desk and turned it toward him. "I've been monitoring the networks," she said. "Looking for any sign of residual activity from the Ascendants. I thought I was being paranoid. I was wrong." "What did you find?" "Look." She pressed play. A series of encrypted messages scrolled across the screen, fragmented and incomplete. But the patterns were unmistakable—someone was communicating across the network, using the same protocols the Ascendants had used. "We thought the Ascendants were gone," Sasha said. "But someone survived. Someone who's been waiting in the shadows." Damon's blood ran cold. "Who?" "I don't know. But they've been active for months. I've been tracking them, trying to pinpoint their location. I think it's a remnant group, a faction that was never fully eliminated." "How many?" "Small. A dozen people. Maybe less." She paused. "But they're organized. They're coordinated. And they've been planning something." "What?" "I don't know. But it's going to happen soon." --- The team gathered at the cabin that evening. Garrett arrived first, his face grim. Evan followed, his eyes shadowed. Sasha arrived last, her laptop under her arm. They sat around the kitchen table, the weight of the news pressing down on them. "We have a new threat," Damon said. "A remnant of the Ascendants. They've been hiding, planning, waiting." Garrett leaned forward. "What do they want?" Sasha answered. "I think they want revenge. They lost everything—their leaders, their resources, their influence. They want to hurt us the way we hurt them." Evan shook his head. "We've been through this before. We'll stop them like we stopped everyone else." "This is different," Sasha said. "They're not powerful, but they're desperate. Desperate people do desperate things." Damon was silent for a long moment. "Then we find them. We stop them. And we end this once and for all." --- The investigation began immediately. Sasha tracked the encrypted messages, following the digital breadcrumbs. Garrett interviewed former Ascendants, looking for any information about the remnant group. Evan coordinated with law enforcement, making sure the team had the resources they needed. Damon focused on protecting his family. He increased security at Milo's school, installed new cameras around the house, and made sure Nina was never alone. The tension was unbearable. Every shadow felt like a threat. Every unfamiliar face felt like an enemy. Nina found him in the garden one evening, staring at the flowers. "You're worried," she said. "I'm always worried." "About the threat?" "About losing everything. Again." Nina knelt beside him, her hand on his arm. "You won't lose everything. We won't let that happen." Damon looked at her, a flicker of hope in his eyes. "How do you know?" "Because we've been through worse. We've survived worse. And we'll survive this too." --- The breakthrough came on a Thursday. Sasha called, her voice tense. "I found them. The remnant group is based in a facility in the mountains. It's the same one where Helena Cross was hiding." Damon's heart pounded. "Are you sure?" "I'm sure. They've been using it as a base of operations. They're planning a large-scale attack." "What kind of attack?" "I don't know. But it's happening soon. We need to stop them." Damon nodded slowly. "Then we go." --- The team traveled to the facility the next morning. The building was old, weathered, and covered in vines. It looked abandoned, but Damon knew better. The remnant was inside. They approached cautiously, their weapons drawn. The door was unlocked. Inside, the facility was dark and silent. The corridors were empty, the rooms barren. It felt like a ghost town. "He's in the main hall," Sasha whispered. "The leader." Damon walked to the door and pushed it open. A figure stood at the far end of the main hall, his back to them. "Mr. Voss," the figure said. "I knew you would come." Damon stepped forward. "Who are you?" "My name is David," the figure said, turning to face him. "I was Viktor's protégé. I've been waiting for this moment." "You're the leader of the remnant." "I am. And I've come to finish what Viktor started." Damon's jaw tightened. "You won't succeed." "Maybe not. But I'll make sure you suffer." --- The confrontation that followed was brief and brutal. Garrett took down two of the remnant's followers with precise shots. Evan fought with his fists, his anger a weapon. Sasha hacked the facility's systems, disabling the automated defenses. Damon fought his way to David. "It's over," Damon said. David smiled. "It's never over." Damon grabbed him, pulling him away from the console. The screens flickered, the lights went dark. "Your network is gone," Damon said. "Your plans are destroyed. You're done." David laughed—a hollow, broken sound. "You think you've won? You think you've stopped us? We'll always be out there. Watching. Waiting." Damon held him. "Then we'll always be ready." --- The team left the facility as the sun began to rise. The sky was painted in shades of pink and gold. The mountains were silent, the wind cold. Damon stood at the entrance, looking back at the building. "It's over," Evan said. "For now," Damon replied.
