And that night, everything seemed normal as usual. Both Jennifer and Erdward chatted about various things related to werewolves.
However, Erdward was still thinking about his daughter. How could he not? Seeing her say something strange certainly made him think.
"I think it would be much better if we returned to the city after this. I've contacted a friend, and she'll take care of everything. Your education, your courses, your future career, and even how you'll socialize well with certain people. What do you think? You'll be happy, right?"
Erdward had hoped that his daughter would be pleased with his words, but Jennifer's expression was completely different, and it confused him.
Jennifer stopped eating, and her initially calm and happy expression changed to one of shock and sadness. It was a stark contrast to what Erdward had imagined.
"Hmm, aren't you happy?" Erdward asked cautiously.
Now Edward was starting to feel uneasy, how could he not? He was starting to fear that Jennifer's hallucinations had truly taken root, and this wasn't a good thing at all.
"Why are you suddenly inviting me to the city, Dad? Didn't you say the forest was your home, and hunting werewolves was your ultimate goal? You'd never care about the world's brilliance or anything else; you'd only dedicate yourself to being a werewolf hunter. So how could you change your mind like this, Dad? I love living in the forest, and I enjoy it."
"Jane, you know... you're truly alone and lonely, I—"
"Dad, I don't feel lonely at all. I have many friends, the little animals. In this forest, I feel calm, I enjoy the pleasant silence without having to waste energy unnecessarily meeting unimportant people, and I—"
"But you have to move on with your life, Jane."
Jennifer was speechless now. She looked at her father with a much sadder look than usual and then nodded.
“Are you just going to take me to town and then leave me there alone and then go back to the woods? Are you going to leave me all alone?”
Erdward was silent for a moment.
“If that's what you're thinking, then stop, because I don't want to! You've already made me live without a mother, do you have to make me live without you too?”
Erdward nodded resignedly.
“Okay, I'll be with you. Live with you in the city, how about that?” Erdward decided, though it was heavy.
He gripped both of her hands tightly, a feeling of hesitation and doubt all rolled into one, and of course, this made Erdward have to choose between Jennifer's future and his selfish ambition.
“I'm sure Dad doesn't want to, right? I don't want to be a burden to you.”
“Jane…”
“I know you, Dad. I know you better than anyone, and stop thinking that maybe I'll just ignore all this?”
“But I want to—”
“Never mind, I have no appetite anymore, I'm sleepy, and I'm going to bed.”
Jennifer immediately walked to the sofa, pulled the blanket over her, and went to sleep with her back to her father. Edward took a deep breath and held his head, which was in such pain.
Honestly, Edward was completely confused.
