I slid the duffel bag containing Kai's belongings off my shoulder as I entered the hospital room. I found him sitting next to Avel, fingers entwined and his posture rigid and protective as if he were prepared to watch over him all night. His head turned the moment he heard me enter, eyes landing on the bag in my hand.
