Chapter 1

1020 Words
Yvonne's POV My eyes settle on the black SUV car parked a few miles away from me. Standing in front of the car is my mum, she leans close to it with her arms folded and her eyes focused on her phone. I can not help but smile at how stunning she still looks from the time I last saw her, it is like mum never ages. She is still so pretty and young. I walk towards her direction with my travelling bag clutched tight to my hands. My footsteps draw closer and it causes mum to snap her head towards my direction. A wide smile spreads across her face and it causes me to dash towards her excitedly. "Oh my darling. You look so stunning." Mum says spreading her arms wide open. I jump into her arms like an excited ten years old and I drown myself in her cologne. Gosh, she still smells the same. I have missed her touch and her smell. "Mum." I cry out pulling out of her embrace. Mum's hands reach for my cheeks and she cups it. "You look so beautiful Yvonne, I am glad to finally have you back at the house." Mum says. I shrug slightly and smile at her. I am glad to be here too. California holds a lot of horrible memories and I am more than happy to have left all of that behind. I am here a fresh start, a new beginning and this time I really hope and pray that everything works out just fine for me. "Come on, let me help you with that." Mum says. She reaches for my luggages and helps me fix them in the car boot. I flash her a grateful smile and make my way to the passenger's seat. Mum hops into the driver's seat, she starts the car engine and zooms off into the busy streets. "Mum, why did you not just ask the driver to come pick me up? I thought you and dad were busy with company stuff." I say glaring at her through the rear glass mirror. She releases a small sigh and shrugs. "I just wanted to be the first to see my daughter. Is that a bad thing?" Mum asks raising a brow at me. I shake my head and smile "No mum, I am glad to see you." If it had been dad who picked me up then things would have been a lot more complicated because we do not have a great relationship. Dad is strict and inconsiderate, I do not like being around him because all it does is bring tension to me and increase my anxiety. "The fact that you wanted to come back home is still a bit shocking to me. I mean you have always wanted to live on your own and do your own things. Do remember how you always complained about your dad and how suffocating his rules are?" Mum pauses to stare at me briefly before moving her eyes back to the steering wheel and clutching it tight. I run a hand through my hair, I know it is going to be tough living with dad again but I do not plan to stay there for a long while. I just want to settle down and be a bit stable before moving out of their house. "I guess I just missed you guys so much." I lie with a straight face. Mum must know it is a lie because well, it is a very obvious lie but I guess she just decides to avoid any further conversation, she waves it off but by the look on her face, I can tell that she does not believe me at all. Mum pulls the car into our parking lot and I can not help but open my mouth wide in shock at how much the house has changed over the past few years. The parking lot is full with more luxurious cars and the environment is crowded with maids and butlers. Mum gets off the car and I do the same. All the servants assemble themselves in a straight line and bow their heads towards my direction respectfully as a form of greeting. I wave at all of them and usher them to help me with my luggages while mum gestures me into the house. My heart races fast I step foot on the cold marble floor, the hairs on my skin rise but not at the coolness of the tiled floor but at the sight of my dad. He sits comfortably on a white sofa with his legs crossed and his eyes on the magazine in his hands. His spectacles are hanging carelessly on his nose and his eyes do not leave the magazine for a single second regardless of the clicking sound of my heels. He has always been this nonchalant about me and my affairs. "Dad." I say bowing my head in front of him. "Welcome home Yvonne. Sit, we have something important to discuss." Dad says in a serious tone. "Can't it wait? I just got back home and I need to freshen up and relax." I say with a frown on my face. I am not surprised though, he has always been inconsiderate. Mum nudges my shoulder and mumbles "Sit down." I sigh and throw myself on the sofa opposite the sofa my dad is comfortably relaxed on. "Here I am dad, go ahead and say what you have to. I wonder what is so much more important than your daughter." I say in a dry tone. Mum sits next to me, she throws her hands over my shoulder and rubs it gently. I hate how dad always has to control everyone around him but oh well, it is what it is. Dad looks up to gaze at me, his glare is intense and cold causing my heart to race really fast. I have a feeling what he has to say is not going to be pleasant to my ears. "You will be getting married to Xavier Black in two weeks time."
