A Strange Pull

Luciana Their eyes glued to me as they approached me, never flinching and then took a seat in front of me. Shortly after they sat in front of me, the lecturer arrived and was about to begin the class. The whole time I tried to keep my eyes away from them, focusing on my drawings, but even from a distance I could feel Isabella’s gaze, boring a hole in my brain. She’d been trying occasionally to get the attention of the one she hugged earlier, failing every time as he completely ignored her. But for some reason, this only made her more angry at me. Just before the lecture began, a short girl with auburn curls rushed towards the back row, sitting right beside me. “I’m Lorena.” She said softly, flashing me a warm smile. I glanced at her and then shifted my gaze back to my drawings, not interested in whatever she had to say or why she chose to sit here. “I know it’s hard to trust anyone when you’re the new girl, especially after your encounter with the queen of Rudesville and her minions, but you can trust me.” She added, staring at me. Seeing that I was still not responding, she heaved a sigh and leaned back on the chair, “I do admire how you stood up to her though. Isabella and those girls, they think they own this school just because they’re hot and popular, but I know the only reason why everyone here pretends to like her and not mess with her is because her father is the chairman of the school board committee.” At this time, I suddenly stopped doodling and shifted my gaze toward Isabella’s direction. It finally made sense. No wonder the b*tch was so arrogant and cocky. “You will have to watch your back, Isabella is many things, vindictive being one of them. She’s going to want to come after you, especially having felt disrespected by a newbie.” She said, but still I did not utter a word. It’s safe to say, I was in the least concerned about what a bunch of mean girls were planning especially after surviving a place like California, where compared to this, Isabella and her clique seemed like elementary school bullies. “Wow,” Lorena muttered, staring at my drawings. “These are so good. You’re an incredible artist.” She commended. At this point, it seemed almost impossible to keep ignoring Lorena. It didn’t matter if I said anything, I was sure she would just keep going and going, and so I shifted my gaze towards her and said, “Thanks, I’m Luciana.” I had to admit, it did feel good to have someone appreciate my drawings. Lorena went on to occasionally tell me stories of Tom Sawyer high school, the dos and don’ts or as she frequently called it, ‘the commandments of Sawyer high’. After the class, I quickly picked up my things to leave, not wanting any awkward encounters again or to be the center of the class’s gossips, but before I could go far, I felt a strong grip on my arm, stopping me mid-strife. He looked at the bruise that I had caught from having my hand slammed by the refrigerator door, and a slight frown appeared on his face, but he did not say anything. For a moment, I stood there, staring at his face with a tinge of curiosity, although disturbed. Why was he staring at me like that? A moment passed, and I yanked my arm, walking away immediately. Lorena hurried toward me, meeting up with me just at the exit of the classroom, “That was Mateo. I wonder what that was about.” She said, walking beside me. Again, I ignored her, hoping she would let me walk alone, but she kept on, “The other two are his brothers, Dante and Thiago. They’re unique, and almost every girl in this school wants to get with them.” “I know you could already tell, they have this certain aura of power and dominance around them which makes everyone in school want to associate with them, but they’re actually harmless.” I suddenly stopped walking and turned toward her, my eyes stern as I gazed at her, “Why are you telling me any of this?” Lorena looked at me with empathy, her face filled with concern, “It looks like you need someone to help you not get into trouble.” She heaved a sigh and continued, “There’s an unwritten ranking in this school, and the triplets are on the top of that list. Isabella has been trying for a year to get Mateo to go out with her, if she starts to feel that the triplets are doting on you, it might cause more problems for you.” I remained quiet for a while and then heaved a tired sigh. This was not something I wanted to deal with, so I brushed it off. The day dragged on slowly, and Lorena showed me around the school, directing me to every class we had. I don’t know why, but the triplets chose to sit in front of me in every one. If they were trying to make me uncomfortable, then they were doing a good job. Still, I could not help but be cautious around them. I couldn’t figure out what it was at first, but something inside warned me to stay away from them.
