Chapter Seven : The Dangerous Alliance.

1253 Words
The rain had not stopped since dawn. It fell in relentless sheets against the towering glass walls of WeiTech Tower, blurring the once-clear skyline of Jiang City into a storm of gray steel and fractured neon lights. Water streamed down the windows in thin, endless trails, like tears the city refused to acknowledge. Inside Liang Wei’s private office the air felt heavier than the storm outside. Zhang Mei stood near the floor-to-ceiling window, her arms folded across her chest as she stared out at the rain-soaked city below. From the reflection in the glass, she looked calm. Collected. Untouchable. But inside her thoughts were moving rapidly, colliding, calculating. Her phone buzzed again. And again. And again. The noise was constant now. Relentless. She glanced down at the screen. Another headline. Another attack. “Mysterious Heiress Marries Tech Billionaire — Strategic Alliance or Corporate Manipulation?” Her lips pressed into a thin line. So it had begun. The media wasn’t just reporting anymore they were shaping perception. Twisting narratives. Planting seeds. Behind her, Liang Wei sat at his desk, flipping through a thick stack of documents Huo Zhen had delivered earlier that morning. His movements were controlled, efficient. But his eyes sharp, focused, dangerous missed nothing. Page after page, he absorbed information, linking patterns, identifying threats. Finally he spoke. “Wang Xiao is moving faster than I expected.” Zhang Mei didn’t turn immediately. She continued watching the rain for a moment longer before replying. “Of course he is.” Her voice was calm. Too calm. “Men like him don’t attack directly.” A pause. “They poison the air first… so the victim suffocates before realizing what’s happening.” Liang Wei leaned back slightly in his chair, studying her. There was something in her tone— not just understanding. Experience. Silence filled the room. Heavy. Unspoken. Then the door burst open. Huo Zhen rushed in, slightly out of breath. “You need to see this.” He placed a tablet on the desk. The screen lit up instantly. A financial graph. WeiTech’s stock price. Zhang Mei stepped closer. Her eyes narrowed. The drop wasn’t dramatic not yet. But it was deliberate. Controlled. Calculated. Liang Wei’s voice lowered. “Short sellers.” Huo Zhen nodded grimly. “Wang Xiao is pushing investors into panic mode. If he keeps this up…” He hesitated. “…he can start acquiring shares through proxies.” Zhang Mei didn’t respond immediately. Her eyes remained fixed on the data. Numbers. Patterns. Movements. Her mind worked faster than the screen could display. “This isn’t just about shares,” she said finally. Liang Wei raised an eyebrow. She turned to him slowly. “He’s not trying to take over WeiTech.” Huo Zhen frowned. “Then what?” Zhang Mei’s voice dropped. Cold. Certain. “He’s trying to destroy it.” The words settled heavily in the room. Rain slammed harder against the windows. Thunder rolled faintly in the distance. For a moment no one spoke. Then Liang Wei stood. His chair slid back with a sharp sound. “Then we don’t wait.” His gaze hardened. “We strike first.” One Hour Later — Executive Boardroom The atmosphere inside the boardroom was electric. Tense. Volatile. Every senior director of WeiTech had been summoned. No explanations. No delays. When Liang Wei entered, the room fell silent immediately. Authority. Absolute. But when Zhang Mei followed beside him the silence shifted. Into whispers. Into tension. Into resistance. “She’s here again…” “Why is she involved in this level of meeting?” “Is this appropriate?” Liang Wei ignored every single one. He took his seat at the head of the table. Zhang Mei stood beside him. Unshaken. “Let’s begin.” Huo Zhen activated the projector. The screen lit up. Charts. Graphs. Data streams. Financial manipulation. Media pressure. Stock movement patterns. Every detail pointed in one direction. Wang Xiao. The room grew quiet. Even the most skeptical members leaned forward. Zhang Mei stepped forward. Her voice cut cleanly through the tension. “This is not coincidence.” Every eye turned to her. “These attacks are coordinated.” A pause. “From outside…” Then her gaze sharpened. “…and from inside.” The reaction was immediate. “What?!” “That’s absurd!” “Are you accusing us?!” Voices rose. Chairs shifted. Tension exploded. Liang Wei raised his hand. Instant silence. Authority. Absolute. Zhang Mei didn’t flinch. “If you prefer denial,” she said calmly, “you can ignore the evidence.” She tapped the screen. A new set of data appeared. “Confidential WeiTech strategies were leaked… before each external attack occurred.” Silence returned. But this time it was different. Heavy. Uncomfortable. Fear creeping in. Zhang Mei’s gaze moved slowly across the room. One face at a time. Reading. Observing. Calculating. “Which means one thing.” A pause. Deliberate. “There is a mole among us.” The words hit harder than any accusation. No one moved. No one spoke. But the shift was visible. Eyes avoided contact. Hands tightened. Postures stiffened. And then Zhang Mei saw it. A small movement. Barely noticeable. But not to her. Li Jun. His fingers tightened slightly on the edge of the table. His breathing shifted. His gaze flickered just for a second. But that was enough. Zhang Mei’s eyes narrowed. She said nothing. Not yet. Hours Later The meeting finally ended. But no one left easily. Executives walked out in silence. Faces tense. Minds racing. Because now they were not just facing an external enemy. They were questioning each other. Trust was broken. Inside the now-empty boardroom, Zhang Mei remained. Standing at the long table. Reviewing notes. Liang Wei approached quietly. “You handled that well.” She didn’t look up. “I’ve had practice.” A faint smirk touched her lips. “I grew up where betrayal was normal.” Liang Wei studied her. Longer this time. For the first time he wasn’t just seeing her as a partner. Or an asset. He was seeing the survivor. The strategist. The woman who had walked through fire and learned how to control it. Outside thunder rumbled. Then the lights flickered. Once. Twice. Then darkness. The entire boardroom plunged into black. Zhang Mei frowned. “Power outage?” Liang Wei reached for his phone. But before the flashlight turned on Footsteps echoed. Slow. Measured. Coming closer. Zhang Mei’s pulse quickened. Her instincts sharpened instantly. The door creaked open. A shadow appeared in the doorway. Lightning flashed illuminating the figure for a split second. Zhang Mei froze. Her breath caught. Her heart skipped. Impossible. A face from the past. A ghost she thought buried. A man stepped forward. Rain dripping from his coat. His presence cold. Heavy. Dangerous. A slow smile spread across his lips. “Long time no see…” His eyes locked onto hers. “Mei.” Her voice barely came out. “…Guo Ren.” Liang Wei’s eyes narrowed instantly. The man stepped fully into the room. Uninvited. Unbothered. “And congratulations on your marriage,” Guo Ren said slowly. His tone carried something sharp beneath it. Something dangerous. Then he added quietly “I hope you enjoy it…” A pause. A smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “…while it lasts.” Lightning cracked across the sky. Zhang Mei’s instincts screamed. Danger. Because Guo Ren wasn’t just part of her past. He was part of something far worse. Something unfinished.
