CHAPTER 004
CLARA MONROE'S POINT OF VIEW
The day begins with the usual hum of the clinic all around me. I can't ignore the change in the air, though. My thoughts keep going back to Alexander's face and the agony in his eyes. I no longer know the same man. Something has occurred. There's a change. I'm also afraid.
However, nothing could have prepared me for the next step.
The jingle of the bell above the clinic door startled me out of my reverie. I expect to see another patient when I look up, but instead I freeze.
Like a specter from my past, she stands there.
Madeline.
No Elise Shaw, she now calls herself. She is the same woman I thought had passed away. The woman who made it all go wrong.
Not just her name has changed. She has shorter, darker hair. Her eyes are icy, even vacant. Her facial scars convey a tale of suffering, survival, and something far more sinister. However, something twisted and hungry is now visible in her eyes. It's in my bones. She has changed since I knew her.
I take a deep breath and back off. Her gaze is so hot that it feels heavy on my chest.
"Elise?" My voice is hardly more than a whisper as I ask.
Her face breaks into a slow smile. It's not the smile I recall—the one I once trusted— that lit up rooms. This one is cold and empty.
She says, "Clara Monroe," in a venomous voice. Or should I say Clara West right now? I see you're running from your past. It's truly unfortunate. You threw away everything that you owned. For what purpose?
I can't stop myself from screaming and telling her that she has no right to be here. I'm motionless. I feel as though I'm looking directly at a stranger. Someone... monstrous has taken the place of the woman I used to know—loved, even.
I manage to say, "Elise," while attempting to maintain my position. "Why are you in this place?"
Her heels click sharply on the floor as she advances a step. "Oh, you don't know at all, do you? Clara, your statement is the truth. You caused me to lose everything. My life. Alexander and I had a relationship that was deeply meaningful to us. You took away everything I had worked so hard to achieve.
Her words cut like a knife through the air, causing pain. Her anger is palpable, pulsing through the room. I attempt to retreat, but she moves too quickly. Her fingers tighten their grip on my wrist. "Didn't you think you could simply vanish? You could hide from your decisions. However, hiding won't last forever.
My chest tightens with breath. "I didn't steal anything from you. I—
Her voice rises in rage as she interrupts me. "You've stolen everything." You stole my future, the babies, and Alexander's love. You destroyed everything!
All I can feel is the constriction in my chest, but I want to scream back, to fight her. With each word she spits at me, the room's air seems to get smaller.
"You believe I desired this?" Finally, with tears on the verge of spilling, I choke out. "You believe that I also desired to lose everything?"
Her hold relaxes for a second, and I fear she may retreat. Then something darker flashes in her eyes.
"No," she says quietly, a sly smile curling her lips. But you'll have to pay for it. You’ll pay for everything you took from me.”
The room feels suddenly colder, as if a chill were leaking into my bones. My feet won't move, even though I want to run and get away. She is present. She won't let me go so easily.
She goes on, in a low, almost too-calm voice, "You think you've won." However, you haven't. You stole something that was never yours. I'm going to make you regret it now.
I can feel her words piercing me more deeply than I ever imagined, and they are like poison. I'm trying to understand everything she's saying, so my mind is racing. The twins, Alexander, everything I believed to be true is disappearing.
I can feel her body heat against mine as she takes a step closer. I try to step back, but she grabs me again, pulling me toward her.
She murmurs, "Clara, you destroyed me." “And now, I’ll destroy you.”
My ears are pounding, and my heart is racing. It feels like I'm suffocating as the pressure in my chest increases. The situation goes beyond simple retaliation. There's more to it—a darkness within Elise that has resurfaced, something I'm not sure I can handle.
"Please," I plead, my voice trembling. "Just give me some space."
However, her laughter is cruel and hollow. "You're not going anywhere that easily."
She leans closer, her lips grazing my ear, and I feel my breath catch. "You will regret returning."
I stand there trembling, bewildered, and afraid as she pulls away.
What is it she desires? What is she now?
More significantly, can I survive her retaliation?
A shiver goes down my spine as I look after her. My heart is beating in my chest like a drum, and my hands are trembling. What is it she wants from me? What will she do?
Her words keep repeating in my head. You took something that was never yours. What does that signify? What is it that she truly wants from me?
The fear that is creeping up on me is unavoidable. Elise has changed into a much more dangerous person than the one I knew before. Although I have no idea what will happen next, I am certain of one thing.
Before it's too late, I must figure out how to stop her.
