Immediately after the declaration of martial law, the bishop militia moved into the crowd that had gathered. They repeatedly asked that the citizens disburse in order not to be in violation of the new public gathering restrictions.  Because the subjects were there at the request of the king, their advice came more as a ‘friendly reminder’ than an order.  Once the palace grounds had been cleared, however, they considered any gathering in excess of ten persons would be a violation and the whole group would be arrested.  The cardinal and archbishop had given clear instructions concerning their role.  They were to be aggressive and spare no mercy. The dissidents needed to be shown that the church was in control.    The majority of the demonstrations and all the graffiti had been concentrated
