WINTER
The rest of the day I spent it prepping myself though it was hard when you got a devil for a boss breathing down in my neck. Liam had sent the dress and no matter how hard I resisted, he didn't listen. So here I am dressed in a something that cost two years of my salary.
I smoothed my palm over the black dress, it glittered under the night light. My reflection winked back at me and I swear she looked nothing like the boring low self-esteem rejected Winter. She looked like a queen. My chestnut hair was tossed into a bun with a few strands left to fall over my face, my facial features decked with a light makeup, my blue eyes shimmered and so did the diamond necklace on my neck.
I hated this!! I hate the way I look. This wasn't me, it was some doll made for the public eye but I knew the mess I was beneath this.
My phone beeped with a message.
“I'm here.”
My heart flipped.
Fuck!!.
I grabbed my purse and left, not before I locked the door, windows. I won't want to come back to see my apartment was robbed, although I doubt there was anything a sane being would want here.
I reached out and towards the black Mercedes that pulled Infront. I slipped in, my gaze met Liam. Clothed in a black tuxedo. He looked like the CEO he was.
“You look ravishing.” He grinned.
“Thanks.” I whispered and ignored the ache my ankles felt in the trap of these excurating heels.
We drove out, the drive was a quiet one, often broken by him, dicatiing rules.
And for a moment I felt like a hired escort than a girlfriend.
The car screeched to a halt and my anxiety skyrocketed
“Calm down.” I mouthed to myself. We stepped out of the car and handed the keys to a chauffeur.
“Remember what I told you.”
“Yes.”
We were very much in love, I was rich and he was the best man in the world.
“Let's go.” We locked hair and glided our way in. The guards pulled the door open, a thick silence descended in the halls, all eyes fell on us.
More accurately: me.
The spotlight shone on us and my gown illuminated.
“Smile.” Liam said through his tight smile. I complied, we stepped in and closer still the crowd didn't fret, they kept gaping at me. I didn't dare look them in the eyes and when I eventually did all I saw was lust, pure raw lust that swirled through their gaze.
“Mr. Colin.” One greeted. “Nice to see you.” And with that the silence evaporated, the air shifted back to normal. The guest continued.
I breathed out a little.
“Same here. The party is lovely.”
It wasn't.
I took my time to take details of interior, the enormous hall was bathed in a golden and black interior, each corner held something breathtaking, a mini statue, a fountain that bled golden water.
“And who is this lovely lady you have here?”
“This is my girlfriend, she was in the country so I figured I could bring her.”
Country?. I haven't left my town.
“Good evening. Truly the party is lovely. I'm honoured Liam and I could be here.” I spoke, short and elegant.
And from the spark in his eyes, he was more than impressed.
Seems the online English class was helpful.
They relapsed into their conversation while I stood like a fool, occasionally throwing a laugh or an advice.
The temperature shifted
My gaze swept through the crowd, searching for the pair of eyes that sent rippled of heat through my spine.
Someone was staring, I could feel it. I could feel the intensity, the scorching gaze that snaked heat through my naked hands.
“Stop gaping around.” Liam pinched in.
I wasn't, I…
I nodded and tried my best to ignore the gaze.
I did.
An hour passed then another and my feet was at the verge of failing me, I was aching everywhere and for someone who worked 18 hours a day, I knew what ache felt like and this was much. My cheek hurt from the fake smile, my head hurt from the constant thinking, my ear hurts from the numerous voice, my back ache for how long I stood.
“Mr. Colin. How about a friendly gaze of cards.”
Translation: gambling.
Fuck no!.
“Sure.”
What!!.
“I will meet you there.” The old man threw me a glance that made me feel disgusted.
“Baby, let's go.”
“Liam, no.” I whispered. “You can't play the game. It's clearly gambling.”
“So?.”
“So it could end badly. What’s not while we came for the party.”
“I can't say no, I need him to like me.” He grunted.
“And I need you not to get in trouble. This could go wrong.” I had seen it in numerous shows it always does. He could end up losing his company, he could get drunk on power and mess with the wrong people. He could get killed!.
And I was not over stressed
“Baby, stop being a scary cat. Nothing will happen.”
“Liam!.”
“Knock it off.” He yelled, I stunned. He never yells. “This is my opportunity to become richer. For one to get something a risk must be taken. Risk equals rich.”
They sounded like some crap he read off some stupid motivational book.
It was a recipe for disaster but he couldn't see it
“I’m going, are you coming with me??.”
I thought for a while. “I will but first I need to use the restroom.” I needed a moment to pull my s**t together and think cuz I could see how this will end
And it was bad.
“The restroom?.” He peered at me for another second before he released my hands from his hold.
I stared at my hand, it was numbed prove of how long and hard it was held.
“It's down the hall at the left. Hurry baby.” I wanted to ask him how he knew but honestly even I didn't want to know.
“I will be back.” With that I disappeared into the crowd and towards the hall, my heels let out a soft thud with every step, I ducked into the restroom and slump on the sink, for first time this night I didn't smile.
My cheeks hurts so much!
I leaned in. I couldn't even wash my face, I would ruin the m******e and I didn't have a makeup kit with me either did I know s**t about making up.
I spent fifteen minutes threading on my life. I wish this party would end soon. I wanted to go back to my little apartment, it might be tacky but at least I could be myself and not this doll.
I sighed, washed my hands and left.
Liam must being worried, he must be looking for me. I hurried over, my mind hazy so hazy I couldn't see the wall up close before it was too late.
I slammed against the soft yet hard wall and staggered back, aiming for the floor before a pair of strong hands shot out and wrapped his hands around my waist and pulled me back and into his hands.
My scream was cut short, I flung my eyes open meeting the pair of grey stormy eyes. A sly grin stained his red lips.
“Be careful, sweetheart.”
